Remote master cylinder fill
 

I have converted my '36 over to hydraulic brakes. I am using '46-'48 brakes and master cylinder. Everything is together and working as it should. With this behind me I would like to have a remote fill for the master cylinder rather than cut a hole in the floorpan. Anyone done this successfully? I open for pointers!

I have used the "search" to see what others have done. The articles I read date back a few years and it doesn't look like the system is foolproof. Any new ideas out there?

As I see it, one option you have is to fabricate a filler cap that will accept a right angle hose elbow to attach a brake fluid resistant hose to. ( I had this type remote fill setup on my '51 single cylinder before converting to a dual cylinder. )

Remote fills are fairly common on newer car, might be able to copy. I have no experience with them other than repairing modern systems.

I added an extension to the filler opening and that made it much easier to fill without spilling.

Here is the dual MC I have on my 41 which leaves plenty of room above it, it is a corvette style MC: http://nolimit.net/products#!/Remote...tegory=8625919 Had an iron corvette MC on my 36 which of course rusted and made a hole to fill it in the floor pan. It was a tight fit and was hard to get the top cover wires in place. I like the aluminum dual remote fill reservoirs also and makes bleeding the brakes easier as well. The brake fluid resistant hoses were a little hard to find. For any dual you have to get a 3 bolt to 2 bolt conversion bracket. Just curious, how does this relate with adapting a single '46-'48 master cylinder?

How does that work without a hole in the floor as no hole wants to be installed in the '36.

I have a remote in my 36.The kit for it came from an outfit in Washington state. They have numerous remote fill adapters for various makes. I did have to wait for the correct size for the 39 and up M/C. Kit comes with a reservoir for the firewall, fluid proof hose and a leakproof cap. I went ahead and made an inspection port in my floor anyway, just because.

works good, no trouble, you could prolly hide the can, I put mine on the firewall just above the steering column for easy access.

The cap and fitting end up pretty close to the floor. Somewhat of a PITA to get it all just so.
I put the hole in the floor to visualize any possible leaking , so far, none seen.

I always thought a person had to leave some space at the top of the m/c when filling it. How would the remote reservoir know how much to put in or does it matter ?

Any expansion need with fluid going out of and back into the MC would just move the fluid up and down the tube and into/out of the remote reservoir. It's an open path, the remote reservoir doesn't need anyway of determining what is going on in the MC.

If I remember correctly I put an ell fitting in place of the straight one provided

I also wanted to have a remote reservoir for the MC on my 47. The old air cooled VW's had the MC down in the tunnel. They had translucent plastic reservoir mounted up under the hood with easy access and flexible lines down to the MC. If you feel like building your own the VW suppliers have them for about $7. Nice thing about them is that you can see the level thru the plastic. A metal cap for the MC can be fabricated with a rt angle fitting.
One caution. Make sure the hoses are compatable with DOT 3 an 4. From what I understand fuel line is not.
