Perhaps that someone was referring to the late 18-prefix axle assembly compared with the rest-of-the-model-year B-prefix axle assembly. There are small differences in the torque tube and drive shaft lengths in the two axles, but overall, both axles are the same length from the front of the drive shaft to the center line of the rear axle shafts and therefore both interchangeable and used with both fours and V8s in production.

David has a good point: The earlier 32 'Model A' style rear ends have a different torque tube and drive shaft. The design as well as lengths are different - due to the different types of rear ends in the cars - but the overall length of the entire "assembly" from transmission back - is the same.
