Change tubular drive line from 10 to 6 spline
 

I have a "33 tudor and am looking at buying a new 3.54 ring and pinion to replace the current 4.11 ratio. The new pinon has a 6 spline pinon and my drive line is tubular (32-34) with a 10 spline female. Can someone advise what to do to make the new 6 spline pinon work with my existing drive line?

Has anyone made this change and if so, how did it work out? These new ning and pinon are available form Drake, Mac's and others but there is no further information in their catalogs.

I'd get a 37-48 solid driveshaft, torque tube, and coupler. Shorten them as needed and down the road you go. You'll really like the 3.54 ratio too!

The 37 - 48 drive shaft he could cut the coupler of and weld it on to his 33 one,I understand there is someone making the coupler 6 to 10 ?

Macs and others have the 10 to 6 spline adapter. You can get a drive shaft kit from Dick Spadaro or modify your own shaft. If the coupler can be removed from the old shaft you can machine the adapter to fit and weld it on. If you feel confident that you have the tools and equipment, do it yourself. If not so much just find a driveshaft repair shop somewhere near your location and set it up for them to do.

I've done a couple using the '33-'34 tubular driveshaft. I cut the weld at the rear coupler on a lathe, knocked the old coupler out, turn down the o.d. of the 6 spline coupler to fit the i.d. of the driveshaft tubing and weld it up. Before you do anything, measure the overall length of the driveshaft and when you put the new coupler in it will have to be 0.500" shorter from the coupler pin hole to the front of the driveshaft to accomodate the longer pinion gear of the later gearset. This should be covered in the instructions you get with the gears. Dick Spadaro also makes a driveshaft kit that is cut to length, but there's no reason not to use your old one if there are no problems with it.

go with Randy's solution, is a real good one and will work vey good,couple doesn't cost much the machine work even at an expensive place will still cost less than changing tube etc. and no one will know! Laurie

I agree!!!

I have done several of the 33-34 drive shafts in this same way. I have a big lathe and Heli-arc in the shop so it is no big deal. If someone brings me the parts all cleaned up, it is about a one hour job if I do not B.S. with the customer too much.

Just be sure to get everything measured correctly. A local Machine shop or drive shaft shop should have no problem as long as you can tell them exactly what you want to wind up with.
