Hello Ford Barn!!




Trying to identify the wheels installed on our Model A back in the day. No known date but hoping someone may be able to give a clue as to the type wheels. Through my many searches it seems like there were not too many options but I'm guessing the family installed anything that would fit back then.

They are probably bent spoke Kelsey Hayses wheels (see photo). The tires are probably 600-16 or larger. There is a remote chance they were made by the Motor Rim and Wheel company but the picture isn't clear enough to tell. I sent you a PM with my email. Email me a better photo if you have one.

I was thinking some kind of stone guard or spoke protectors.
I will scan the photo (I have two) and maybe be able to get some better resolution for you.

The photo is a bit blurred so it's hard to tell if they are bent spoke types or not. I can't even tell if they are an assembled wheel or a welded one. Ford used welded spoke wheels from 1926 up thru 1935 in various sizes and widths and they will all fit a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern but some need adapters for the drums used. The hub caps look to be aftermarket and somewhat similar to the caps used on the wide five wheels from 1936 through 1939. Kelsey Hayse made lots of different wheels including various spoke designs. They were a sub contractor to Ford Motor Company for a long time and made many different wheels for them. The bent spoke type were aftermarket and were sold by a lot of different tire and wheel related businesses.

THANK YOU for all the help and after a few suggestions on the photo I inverted the color spectrum and you can see the spokes are on the "outside" of the "Disc" so it would appear these are standard wheels, think Charlie was spot on in his ID.


Having no experience with our Model A (yet) or any Model A, we are learning and I thought the wheel had some kind of protective cover over the spokes.


I will get a better picture to you Charlie and post here too.

SO think we are back to trying to ID these wheels.


After changing the contrast, lighting and focus on the pictures there does not seem to be shadows for the spokes on the hubs of these wheels and the lines I thought were the spokes are not consistent with spoke patterns; which suggests that the "disc" is some kind of cover or???


The dome caps are pretty pronounced as well so back to searching...


The rubber seems to fill up the wheel wells too; maybe truck tires?

There were aftermarket wheel covers for spoke type wheels back in the day. I've seen several types but most cover the spokes up completely. Maybe someone will recognize them. They might be Lyon hub caps. They could be for a 35 wheel but installed on a larger diameter wheel I don't know.
