chrome paint bumper 2 Attachment(s)
Has any one had success repairing a small area on the bumper with chrome paint. What brand and process did you use. I want to put off the $500 for a replacement bumper on my 64 Galaxie. Thanks, Rob

Re: chrome paint bumper I recently tried a rattle can of "chrome" paint - $8.00 for a short can. It was for a plastic grill on a 96 Ranger and I preped (cleaned, 600 grit sand, cleaned again) a section on the back of the grill. It looked just slightly shinier than grey primer. Got my $8.00 back and asked at the local ACE Hardware paint guy. "No such thing as paint that ends up looking like chrome". The grill is semi-gloss black now.
Are there any re-chromers around there? |
Re: chrome paint bumper My experience with chrome in a can. It generally does not work! But, I can say that Eastwood makes a pretty decent product. The trick to it is you have to use a gloss black base! Apply several coats of the chrome paint.it's not a substitute for chrome, but it will save you $500....

Re: chrome paint bumper There products available to mimick electroplating and from what I have seen the finished product looks as good or better. The good thing is it can be applied to plastic as well as metal. The bad thing is the cost of equipment and materials. Take a look at spectrachrome.com or pchrome.com

Re: chrome paint bumper Maybe it is just me; but paint on a bumper usually looks tackier than a rusty bumper and completely painted bumpers look even worse.

Re: chrome paint bumper craig thats the stuff ive been hearing about.nothing to do with a rattle can

Re: chrome paint bumper I'll tell you what worked for me once on a 64 FAIRLANE.
You may laugh and scoff, but a rolled up sheet of REYNOLDS WRAP rubbed over the bad area did work. |
Re: chrome paint bumper Nothing replaces chrome on a bumper. The alternatives don't last long at all.

Re: chrome paint bumper After clean and smooth,a kind of OK temp fix is with some of the chrome tape{ made for kickpanels or other added dec.} Come's in 2in wide an even up to 4in. rolls. Yes the edge shows, but if put on right, look super a few feet away.

:D Years ago, I drove OTR. Took her on a trip to FL. It was about 0300 and she stuck her head out of the sleeper curtain and announced she had to piddle. I-95 was not finished all the way back then and I was back on U15 in SC. I asked if she hold it until I got to the place I-95 began again. I pulled off the ramp shoulder and calmly told her to squat at the side of the fuel tank as hurriedly as she could. I also told her if I saw anything coming out of the woods I would tap the horn so she could hurry back in. :p I gave her a few minutes to adjust and laid on the air-horn. She about tore the door off trying to get back in. |
