D-Day
 

Oh what a night, oh what a day all those involved
went through to make what happened today 75 years ago.
I appreciate all the sacrifices involved for what we have today.

What an amazing operation was Overlord as it was named. Much bravery and sacrifice. We can never repay those heroes. Sad part is that many younger generations just wouldn't have a clue about this. Plenty of documentaries on TV at the moment for those who wish to learn. LEST WE FORGET. Kevin.

I worked with a one of the paratroopers that jumped in to Normandy the night before the landings. He once told me that after that not much of anything scared him. That statement said a lot about what it must have been like. My mind can't comprehend what it must have been like.

I love the coverage last night and today it is getting. My dad was not in D-Day, but was put ashore after and fought their way to Brenner Pass. He never spoke of where he was or what happened other than he was a radio operator and runner for his squad. I restored the WWII Ford Jeep to his old Division complete with all the radios that would be available at that time.


The guys that landed on the Beaches 75 years ago were very brave men.

Politics aside.....
I've never met a D-Day soldier but I can imagine the sacrifice.
Did meet a crew member of a militarized tugboat (think Benjamin
Button movie). Most of those guys perished. I know a lot about
that subject as I had connections with Military Sea Lift command
when I was in the USN.

Our retired school principle was in the Normandy invasion, and also fought in the battle of the bulge. He came and talked to our aviation group one time about his experiences. Also brought along his "war treasures", and knife, fork and spoon with the German swastika that he said was gotten when in "the Eagle's Nest" He passed away a few years ago. It really must've been something, what these brave men went through.

In my time I've had the honor to work with numerous WW2 veterans, including some that were at Normandy. My late father-in law was a B17 ball turret gunner. Most of these extremely brave men are gone now, my they rest in peace. We must never forget all they've done for us.

We should never forget our veterans My dad was in Italy and North Africa during WWII. He never talked much about it, but he was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery under fire.Sadly our history is not taught the way it should be in today's schools. Most of these kids do not realize that the freedoms they have today came by way of our soldiers who fought to preserve our freedom.

It was exactly a month after D Day when my dad landed at Bayeux with the Canadian army. He saw plenty of evidence of how bad it had been. And he was advised to expect more of the same on the way to Caen. My dad learned to drive trucks in the army and some of them were Ford flathead powered gun towers. I've put some of his war history online so it will be around for future generations to read. Surprising how many people are not even sure of what D Day was now.

No offense. I'm not sure if politics had anything to do with it. Politics kept us out, till pearl harbor. My understanding anyway. Not that I have any love for a country that has a master plan of genocide. I won't get into pre-ww2 stalin either on that subject.



Different time. A significant time to be remembered and the men that faced it head on.

They were certainly amazing. They stepped up when we needed them to. I would hope that the current generation would do the same despite appearances. I have to keep telling myself that there are ancient Greek writings from 2000 years ago bemoaning the next generation as indolent , self centered and soft. ! I suspect the next generation is no different from them or us but hopefully we will never get to find out

I have had multiple WII and some WI patients over the years. They served their country and we owe them a huge debt but some were far from saints in civilian life. Some of their antics make what some of the youth do today seem like kindergarten games -Karl

W1 was the war to end all wars. It's a interesting current time. You can sit in a box in Nebraska and fight a war anywhere in the world. Chips in hand. but Can't we all get along. ... always something.


Certainly veterans of war always have my support.

Strange to think they are most gone. I remember it was not long ago when the last of those that fought the Great war were passing. not many New Zealanders fought in Normandy as our troops were confined to Italy but we had a number of pilots with the RAF who were there. I'm visiting my daughter in London in October and plan to visit Normandy as I read a lot of military history

My number plate frame on my mustang is a reminder.

As a WWII Normandy combat veteran (29th Division U.S. Army) I thank all of you for your comments. It is a good feeling not to be forgotten for our part in our fight for a just cause.

There was an amazing film on HBO on D-Day that focused on the B-17 bombers and the valiant crews, only 17-22 years old, that flew them. Casualties were over 28,000! Watch for it, as I hope they run it again. It is a simply marvelous story of the planes, and the brave kids who flew them.
