Fuel pump location question. Good morning. I am close to installing a fuel pump from the vendors. As I am running a tube header, it seems like a tight squeeze on the right frame rail. Not a very compelling question...I certainly have some ideas, but am always eager to see others. Greg.

Re: Fuel pump location question. I too run a tube header, located the pump outside the frame to keep it cool. Never had a problem. Line runs vertically down from the tank and parallel back up to the carbs. Used copper tubing with fuel hose at each end to take any flexing.

Re: Fuel pump location question. I use a Reds try-y Header. Holly fuel pump is mounted inside the right side frame rail. I use SAE J30R9 fuel hose from the tank to the pump and from the pump to the carburetors. On a hot day the pump will feel warm, but not hot. Been on for about a year, no problems so far.

Re: Fuel pump location question. Jim, when you say "outside" meaning underneath or actually outboard of rail? That's what I have in mind, 2 lines parallel, with regulator and gauge on firewall and straight run to the 97. @smogtech is your pump up by firewall or up front...it's really close to Reds tube header at the logical midpoint location, thanks.

Re: Fuel pump location question. Nosetime, the motor part of the pump is about 2 inches from the header, the fuel part of the pump is about 5 inches from the header. I was concerned about heat and thought about adding a heat shield, but did not. I have had fuel pressure problems. I use a Holly pressure regulator set at 1 1/2 psi, while driving the car it worked fine, but sitting at an idle the pressure would slowly rise until at about 4 psi the Stromberg carburetors would flood. Added a bypass line on the firewall from the high side to the low side. Problem solved.

Re: Fuel pump location question. Yep, I don't remember much from school, but I do remember Gay-Lussacs Law. As temp increases, so does pressure. If I go close to header like you say, a heat shield will be mandatory. I think i'm just going to run it in rail...but behind the firewall or some other location.

Re: Fuel pump location question. 1 Attachment(s)
Here's mine. The fuel pump is located tucked inside the frame rail just forward of the center hood rest (uses the same bolt to secure the pump). Fuel lines are Aeroquip steel braided fuel lines. (All the fittings are Aeroquip AN type fittings) Forward of the fuel pump is the fuel pressure regulator and pressure gauge.

Re: Fuel pump location question. Not to dis anyone on this site but there is a sister site to this one that specializes in Hot Rods and the like,
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ This question on that site would get more eyes from additional knowledge people. |
Re: Fuel pump location question. Carl, that would be easy, if I did not have the tube header.

Re: Fuel pump location question. nosetime, yes, mine is outside the frame, much cooler than inside. I thought about putting a rock-shield in front of it, but haven't.
