I use Weldwood Contact Glue for most everything - I'm an upholsterer , This glue will take the sun heat . I use it for tops , door panell, and etc. Coat both sides - Let dry use wax paper as a separator to get the gasket in place - Remove the wax paper press together. 36fordguy

I like 3M Black weatherstrip adhesive. If you use the yellow, it may ooze out and be seen and who wants to see yellow. If black toozes out, it will match the weather strip and not be noticeable.

Super Weatherstrip Adhesive, 03602, 1 oz


Or you can get the larger tube of 3M 08011 at most auto parts stores.

Do not glue the cowl vent gasket in place as you will regret it down the road if you do.

interesting answer David g , could you please expand on that? i have a vintiques gasket, there are no lips or channels, its just flat. why wouldnt it just blow away the first time its opened? wrong gasket brand?

It should be a tight fit in the channel, made tighter when the lid is closed for a protracted period of time. Why risk paint damage when a friction fit will do the job. They were not glued down by Ford when the car was built.

what? i dont get to get glue in my hair and up to my elbows to do the job? shucks. when i was a kid i did one in an old chevy. laying on my back, feet up over the seat back, head and neck kinked against the firewall. the gasket was too small, so every time i let go, a minute later it popped out of the trough. so i'd hold it longer...pop out again, etc until my hands were covered in glue, and the thing was in crooked, and my neck has never been the same to this day. thanks David

That's why Chevys are Chevys. We're taking Fords here and the gasket goes in from the top.

If the vent opening doesn't have a channel for the gasket, you can cement it to the underside of the lid. We use 3M weatherstrip cement. It is a good idea to mask around the job, as the cement has a habit of migrating to hands, etc, and is tough to remove without paint damage. You should know that many replacement seals are too thick to allow the lid to fully close. Try it dry before permanent installation. We have had to reduce the thickness by sanding to allow the lid linkage to go "over center" to close.
