1946 Ford Insturment trim
 

How do you attach the stainless trim to the two bolts that hold the insturments to the dash? It appears that it was originally glued somehow.

I believe it was silver soldered to the trim.

I didn't see any evidence of solder on my 46 and used a silicone adhesive to reattach it.

The trim for the four small gauges attaches with 4 tabs that fit under the trim above, and is secured with a threaded stud through the dash, one at each end. I don't believe that trim is reproduced. Welding or soldering to the thin metal trim usually isn't possible. The studs just hold the trim in place, so if you grind the heads of two small bolts flat, JB epoxy weld may hold it if allowed to completely cure, and the nuts are carefully tightened while the trim is held in place.

I have so far been unsuccessful at re-soldering one of the trim clips back onto my '48 glove box trim. Will probably resort to JB Weld.

I'm a bit confused about the trim that is being described. A picture would give me a better understanding of the issue. I just had my clock and speedo out of my '46, and the trim is part of the faceplates. Am I missing something?

The original question was about the metal trim faceplate for the gauges.

When I redid mine in my old 46, I used flathead machine screws and jb welded them to the dash. it held fine.

Thanks to everyone that has posted a suggestion to my question. This car was my first car when I was 16 yrs old. I was able to finally track it down after trading it for a '59 Corvette just over 52 yrs ago and purchase it back. It needs a little love! Thanks again for all the help!

The "trim" in question is on the left side of the dash, below the speedo and clock die cast trim. The four tabs on the top of the gauge trim go under the speedo/clock trim, and is held in place by the threaded studs at the end. It matches the trim on the face of the glove box on the right. Good photos of the dash are in the excellent 1941-48 Club book, which all owners of vehicles those years should own. The depiction of the trim itself is shown on page 56 of the 1944-1952 body parts catalog. It is available at C&G as item V44. It isn't cheap, but certainly valuable for anyone restoring Fords of those years. 800/ 266-0470
