Door upper and lower rubber bumpers

Has anyone got any tricks on how to remove old rubber bumpers that are original and hard as a rock? This is a 1930 Tudor. I don't want to brake the metal dove tail brackets lose from the doors. Maybe someone has an idea on softening it up a bit and make it turn loose.

Why not take a small drill and make a line of drill holes through the center of the hard rubber to get it to brake in two.

I'll do that very think. Thanks for the tip. I'm getting older and out of new ideas.
