Are the rear bumper guards on a '46 Ford woody shorter than the front bumper guards?

Not sure if they are shorter but the profile where they meet the bumper is way different. Bill

You might look to see if they have a different part number then the regular bumper guard.
If so, at least you would know something was different about them.

Here are a couple of shots of the 46 that restored back in the 80's. I would say that the rear guards are smaller than the front, but since I sold the car long ago this is all I can help you with.

Man that’s a beauty Chuck! Makes me think hard about restoring mine. I’ll take some measurements when I get home, albeit a 48 model.

Thanks for the photos. It does appear that the rears may be shorter, but they also have a different curve where they bolt to the bumper. I have a '46 grille guard on my '48 coupe. I was hoping to put some short (smaller) bumper guards that would match the front shape on the rear. Obviously the rear guards on a woody would not work on the rear bumper of a '48. Your photos were very much appreciated.

Just went out to the garage, fronts are 9 and 3/4" and the rear's are 9 and 1/4". Makes sense as the rear bumper on Station Wagons are unique with the center rolled down to clear the spare tire.

Went to look at my 48 and got a surprise(I’m not a woody expert by any means).
Looks like the front is 48 and the rear bumper is actually the front off a 41(no script).


But they are shorter! :)

Interesting point that you raise. Check out this picture of a 1941 Mercury Woody, and it seems that it has a rear bumper similar in profile to the front one.

Now check out this 1946 Ford Woody, and the rear bumper has the same profile as the 1941 Fords, however, there is a dip in the middle that is unique to the Woodys.

Now compare the rear bumper on this 1947 Mercury Woody and you will see that it identical to the one on the 1946 Ford Woody.

Finally, here is a picture of a 1941 Ford Woody. You will see that a similar rear bumper is fitted to all Ford Woodys from 1941 to 1948. The Bumper Guards seem to be familiar in profile to those firred on the 1941 Fords. However, in saying all this, it is my observation only, as Ford and Mercury Woodys were never sold new in Australia. Please correct me if I am wrong?

merc, you are correct about the Station Wagon not being sold in Australia. Remember that all '41-'48 Station Wagon bodies were built in Iron Mountain Michigan and shipped to assigned assembly plants in America. It would be cost prohibited to ship bodies to Australia. The book "Famous Ford Woodies" has a chapter dedicated to "War Wagons". It tells of Canadian built Ford Station Wagons shipped to Australia and several other countries in WW II, to be used as war vehicles. If someone found a "War Woodie", it could easily be made into a production vehicle.

Kinda hard to get a good picture other than the one above, the car is put away in a dark shed and the bumpers right up against some shelving. By the time I get home from work it’s dark out there. I might be able to get a better picture on Saturday.

Because of the low production numbers, Woodie rear bumpers aren't reproduced by anyone that I know of. I read of one guy that took a passenger car rear bumper and heated the top of the bumper red hot and actually rolled the indentation himself. About 5 years ago I saw a '46 Wagon bumper at HERSHEY and thought to myself to possibly purchase it as a spare. Well, when I found out that the owner wanted a grand for it, I decided I didn't need it. I just took a few minutes and looked thru back issues of The Woodie Times classified and didn't see any for sale. Hope your's is correct.

I have two FORD 1941 1948 ford woodie rear bumpers.. ONE is NOS.. the other is a presentable usable one.. mine N.O.S. unit was NOT at hershey swap meet 5 years ago, as I haven't had it that long.


as far as I know.. 41 - 48 ford woodies have the same rear bumper..
AND as far as I know 1942- 1948 merc used the ford rear bumper.

until recently I didn't realize that 41 merc woodie had a unique rear bumper, likely because I hadn't ever encountered one in the wild.. however.. apparently it does and of course I realized this fact AFTER i passed up the opportunity to buy one.. .

I have never investigated the differences in rear bumper guards but it does make sense that rears would be slightly different.. and likely more like 41's

I finally got to the shed and was able to take a good pick of the 48 Woody rear bumper. Looks like it’s the same as 41. I guess Ford didn’t change them from 41. Even though the fronts were changed to match the cars of the era.
