Engine oil measuring rod Hello,
can someone please give me the exact measure between "min" and "max" markins? This is no longer visible on my dipstick. Thanks in advance! |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod What I would do to mark a dipstick with no markings is to change the oil in my engine. After refilling it with 4 quarts of oil, and giving it time to have it all drain down to the pan, I'd pull the dipstick and scratch in a line where the oil level is.

Re: Engine oil measuring rod Thanks.
And what is the difference between "max" and "min"? |

Hope that helps. |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod To get it truly correct. You have to add 4 1/2 quarts of oil at oil change.
1/2 quart is left in dipper tray at time of oil change. Engine takes 5 quarts if your system where completely dry. You had removed oil pan. |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod And Werner, just to make sure there's no confusion .... remember, our friends across the water in the USA are referring to a US quart which is 946 ml. In the UK a quart is 1136 ml.:)

I've always known that the Americans used the same terms but different measures for their volumes and some weights (confusing!) but never got around to researching those figures. After all, the American system is not used anywhere else in the world (that I am aware of). |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod MODEL A DIP STICK P/N B-6750-A:
This is the one with the round circle on top end. Starting from top of dipstick where BOTH halves of stick enter the hole in block: 6 and 5/8ths to F mark 1 and 1/8th from F to L mark. 1/4 inch from L mark to end of stick. |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod Traditionally, two marks on the automotive dip stick translate into one quart difference.
If you're at the lower mark, you can add a quart and you'll not overfill. Joe K |

Re: Engine oil measuring rod The dipstick on my 29 looks like the top picture that is for the v/8, but measures exactly like the bottom picture of the 4 cylinder one. Is that possible or did someone take a v/8 stick and cut it off and re mark it? if so they did a darn nice job.

Re: Engine oil measuring rod More likely an "early" dip-stick. Ford "simplified" the dip-stick from "bayonet" style to the round loop in January 1929.
I acquired a 1930 engine from a Vermont farmer's back lot in 1976 - it had the earlier dip-stick. Joe K |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod This is simple. Run engine and allow oil to warm. Drain oil completely. Add 4 liters of oil, scribe line on dip stick at level of oil, and mark with a V. V = voll or full

Re: Engine oil measuring rod Thank you all for many helpfull hints!

Re: Engine oil measuring rod If engine holds five quarts, with 1/2 quart remaining in the tray, I would think:
Drain oil, add four quarts, mark this level as low, add another 1/2 quart, mark this level as full. Yes...no...maybe? |

Re: Engine oil measuring rod Quote:
Ctjack's post is in liters instead of quarts, 4 liters is 4.22 quarts with another half quart in the dipper tray would be 4.72 quarts. Fairly close to full. |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod I hate to be picky but everyone mentions oil remaining in dipper tray but not in the valve chamber.
Four quarts for a refill is correct. 4.5 will over fill and 4 liters will overfill. Overfilling will contribute to rear main leak while parked in driveway or slight uphill, and possible blowby with excess being thrown around on cylinder walls and pistons |
Re: Engine oil measuring rod How much oil remains in the valve chamber?
Anyone? My guess...not enough to worry about |
