Air Filter

Need to change out the paper Unimaze element but discovered K&N makes a nice six incher that is reusable. Any thoughts on the better route to go ?

Re: Air Filter

K&N without reservation. I suggest using the Hiboy filter rather than put one in the Airmaze.

K&N only way to go, I have the K&N E3050 on both my Model A's

The calculation on the below web site are at an engine running 2800 rpm, and the conclusion is you can use any one of three filters, they conclude any of the three filters below are adequately sized.
◦K&N offers several filters that can be used with the Air Maze housing.
◾Part # E-3050 is 3.5 inches long.
◾Part # E-9257 is 5.5 inches long.
◾Part # E-2040 is 6.625 inches long.
But the site makes this recommendation.
“◦To provide some margin for the filter getting dirty, before you get around to cleaning it, I would recommend the 5.5 inch long length. I know it is an over kill, but I am currently using the 6.625 inch long one to allow for driving on dusty gravel roads and to extend my time between filter cleaning / re-oiling cycles.”

Re: Air Filter

Get rid of paper and agree to use metal screen one available from vendors or k&N.

Re: Air Filter

Use the K & N, also order the Service Kit for cleaning and re-oiling the filter. The 3050 is a direct replacement for use in an Air Maze. You will need to source a longer screw that holds the filter and endplate to the body of the air maze, to accommodate the other 2 longer filters.

I have a metal air filter. They are good at keeping out cigarette butts and bottle tops.

Shown below is the engine bay of my '29 roadster. The "Hi-Boy" filter came with modern hose clamps. I spray painted some repop/original clamps black with brass screws. The carb is a modern reproduction of the original Zenith. It is the "balanced" version. :)

Re: Air Filter

Bob, what kind of an intake is that?

What advantages does it have?

Bob-A, How does that snorkel not melt?

Bob-A, Went the same air filter roue and like it. What does a balanced carb do, and how do you like your oil filter arrangement ?

Hello Mike,

the snorkel ist made of copper pipe. I have nearly to the exhaust pipe isolatet with fiberglass tape, because hot intake air reduces the engine power.

Re: Air Filter

old31,

It is a Simmons "Swan" manifold from back-in-the-day. There is a copy of an ad for one in the book: Those Wonderful Unauthorized Accessories for the Model A Ford. The car is out of service at present and I did not run the "Swan" manifold long enough to measure any improvement. The date in the pic is incorrect.

1930artdeco,

What Werner says.

Mulletwagon,

A "balanced" carb allows the air-pressure to equalize between the carb air intake and float bowl. This prevents an air cleaner from causing a carb to run rich. Do a search and you will find more and better info in the FordBarn files. I like the filter it adds more oil to the system besides filtering. Plus, any filter is better then no filter.

The '29 roadster has been off the road for a few years now. I hope to have it back in operation this year.
