Radiator cap/grillshell

I mounted my radiator in my 29 Tudor, on it's padded spring mounts. I mounted the grill she'll to the radiator using the tabs on the radiator.

The problem is the filler neck doesn't seem to come through the grill shell enough to allow me to put the cap on. The filler neck mouth barely protrudes through the grill shell.

I don't know the history of the car. The grill shell was just flopping around on the radiator unsecured when I got it. Any thoughts or advice appreciated. Google photo album of the car can be found here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/9dgiEq4TPAzhtGBj9

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice.
Marty

I'm no expert but is that a 28?? It seems to have a red steering wheel and a 7 tooth steering box. This doesn't help with your problem but just wondering. Jack

Hi Marty
Nice project.
Looks like that is a new aftermarket shell and there are a lot of fitting problems involved with those I am told.
Contact Sammie at Arizona A's for more info

Where did you buy the radiator?

I have seen this problem before.

Your issue most likely is a combination of an aftermarket radiator and a reproduction shell.

Ah, that's too bad. I wonder if a radiator shop could extend the neck on the radiator. Who makes a good reproduction shell?

Re: Radiator cap/grillshell

There was a similar thread not long ago. I've had the same problem with the repro 28-29 radiator shells . I have ground down the height of the neck of the shell a bit and then ground down the bottom of the repro radiator caps for more clearance . This will allow the cap to meet the threads and tighten down . It will take trial and error to determine how much material must be removed . I think that this method works better than removing and shimming up the radiator neck . care must be taken when grinding . I used a nine inch air grinder. It would be much safer to use a long file but will take a lot more time .

Thanks for the information. I may try this.
Though there isn't much of the radiator neck sticking up at all.
