Powermaster vs Whitney
 

I'm wanting to convert to an alternator on my model a so can I please have some pros and cons on the power master and Whitney alternators ? Thanks for your help, Speedster

I have a Powemaster alternator that looks similar to an original. No problems, but expensive. I really don’t like the way the more modern alternators look on a Model A.

I have a Whitney on my '37 Ford and trouble free for over 10 years. On mine it is 6 volt and I think it is a Kawasaki alternator inside an aluminum tube.Looks original works great.

I looked at the Whitney website and they don't recommend the use of halogen headlights--- I have halogen headlights, I'll keep the original generator that works them just fine, and I can hand crank start a dead battery--- can't do that with alternator ---- perhaps not for everyone, but I don't have any need to modify something that is reliable and working--- a battery every 10-15 years, 40 years for belt, 45 years in generator

What is the real world output of both of these conversions, it is something I have wondered about, want to see tested on the car, not on a test bench, with normal belt tension , sustainable hot output, idle output, ---- by sustainable i also mean the belt isn't getting fried, having normal belt life, not having to have 2 spares for a several hundred mile trip

I have a Whitney on my AV8 roadster because Whitney uses the the Ford generator bearings which are designed to support a fan. I use halogens and it works fine.

Model A generators donnot have a fan,so either one should work fine. A friend has a power gen and likes it. The Whitney does not charge much at idle just like a generator,so that would be a plus for the powergen.
