32 v8 carb setup original single barrel

Has anyone run a original detroit lub single barrel carb manifold setup on 21 stud v8 ? if so are the Detroit Lub carbs any good or is it better to go with the 97 carb setup ? tnx mch

You will need a '32 or '33 intake to run the DL.My advice is to go with a 97 on a 34 up intake.

I have several setups on the shelf for a reason....not to mention the horrible post generator...
Above is only for getting points in judging...my 2c.

The flathead gained 20 horsepower by going to the dual plane intake/two barrel carb.

We run a stock set up, Detroit Lubricator and all. If it's rebuilt correctly it runs our 32 beautifully. We have had it in Palos Verdes in So Cal climbing mountain's, we have done several flat land tours and it runs our 32 along at 50 to 55 just perfect (3:54 rear gears).

Robert,

I agree, but the secret, as you said, is "rebuilt correctly".

I sure hope that "those that do know how" pass along that knowledge to someone for the future!! I know I sure would be willing to learn. Also, who do you recommend these days as the person we used (I believe) is no longer with us???

Robert,

Sorry, I wish I knew someone I could recommend but I lack first-hand experience for the simple reason that I do my own. The instructions in the '32 and '33 Service Bulletins walk you through the process, but the challenge is finding replacements for worn parts such as the throttle shaft; even the gaskets are often hard to come by although I believe that they are current available from Rennerscorner.com.

As for post generators, I've never had a problem with them, but I do recognize that if you use one with a too-long fan belt trouble will come knocking.

I run a Detroit Lubricator in my stock '33 Sedan, once I figured out how they work. They operate slightly different from the two barrel for '34 and beyond. I found complete operating instructions on the internet and took time to digest the details in this failed design. The main difference with later carburetors I believe is that the choke on a '33 is manual in that as the the car warms up I manually close the choke in the increments the carburetor allows for a nice idle. I have three Detroit Lubricators. I spent over $400 to professionally rebuild one of them. I just couldn't make it work. One of the other ones actually worked enough to work with and now does just fine. Remember, it was a failed design for a reason. But if you are diligent, You can figure it out.

I had been running a recondioned Detroit Lube carburettor for a while, it was giving me starting problems , stalling problems when about when you wanted to stop, it finally gave me serious problems on starting and black smoke was coming out of the exhaust and the engine would not start, so I fitted a single too double throat adapter on the original manifold and fitted a Stromberg 48 carburettor which is a 1934-35 V8 model carburettor and the performance improved tremendously, starting was vastly improved and overall it was a big improvement. I have had no problems with single post generator it works very well.

Just think how much better yet it would run with the proper dual plane '34-up intake manifold.

I'm pretty sure Charlie ny on this forum is familiar with doing rebuilding a Detroit Lubricator carb correctly.

I wanted to keep our 1932 - 3/W as mostly original as much possible that is why I kept the original 1932 inlet manifold on it with original fuel pump single post generator etc.
The 32 now with the Stromberg carburettor starts really great even if you leave it for a month, runs great and therefor is more reliable. I also have original type 1932 air cleaner decals available if anybody is interested.

Re: 32 v8 carb setup original single barrel

Actually, it was not a failed design, but rather one way ahead of its time and never perfected to reach its potential until near the end of when new vehicles were still equipped with carburetors. The modern term for the technology is variable venturi.

I wonder if anybody has tried to modify the D/L carburetors, Might be interesting to look into it sometime.

@Scicala

I thought I had seen a previous post here on the barn where they said that Charlie NY was doing them...I figured IF I waited long enough....confirmation would arise......AND it did thanks!!!! The only issue we have ever had is the float sticking after the car sat for long periods. SO before we started the car, a light little tap on the top of the bowl before we started the car corrected that!!!

Better talk to Charlie first. I don't think he likes them very much.

I believe Charlie ny did a seminar at the Early Ford V8 Club national meet in Dearborn this past summer, that included Detroit Lubricator info. I was bummed because I couldn't make it there.

With a DL carb a good hard turn will starve and stall the engine. Wait a few minutes start it up and go. It's a learning experience.
