leaking shut-off
 

Replaced original shut off valve with a repro about 10 yrs ago and now it is leaking. The repro looks same as original and how is it to rebuild? leak is very small.

Ten years, it doesn’t owe you anything.

Even a small gas leak is a problem. Enjoy.

The best choice is replace it, In my opinion! Gasoline can be dangerous, best to assure NO LEAKS!

I will be the contrarian, I would rebuild it. Take it apart, sand the surfaces lightly with 600 to 800 grit sand paper, clean it well and lap it with white toothpaste. Will be good for years to come.

I would first try tightening the packing nut a small amount and observe the results . If the packing nut is tightenbed too much it will lock up the valve . If tightening the packing nut didn't solve the problem I would replace the cut off valve .

Had this problem. tightened nut, then Rebuilt once, then replaced twice - still leaked

Barn recommended replacing with Brattons part #13160 - issue solved. Made in the USA, 3 year warranty. Most others are made overseas.


Another possibility is to find an original - try rebuilding it.

I agree. I rebuild my 1929 valve more than 20 years ago, and it's still leak free.
Is the leak external, or is it down the line past the tapered valve?
Always use the small screen in the valve, to keep out junk.

Thats the valve I got. Had to put a die on the threads to get it to line up correctly but other than that it works perfectly.

Not sure why, most posts I've seen shy away from rebuilding repop shutoffs,. Other Barners recommend finding an original to rebuild. Here is a u-tube video, personally have not used the video, there may be other u-tube videos.

Yep, I posted not long ago about rebuilding a repro valve and all responses were "it's not worth it".

I have always wondered REALLY what is the purpose of the shut-off valve? Was it because Henry thought there would be a lot of trouble with the Zenith carb.? The reason I say this is I know of a gentleman that never turns his shut-off off when just parking or putting it away in the garage. He has never had leakage at the carb. nor shut-off valve.

If you leak 10 gallons of gas on the ground you will know why the shut-off is there. Maybe the Ford Co. lawyers came up with this! It only takes a speck of dirt to hold the needle valve open. If when you shut the car down and there is no leak at the carb there may be evaporation over time that will allow gas into the carb and maybe also dirt.
