Noise in Flywheel area
 

I have a winding noise under inspection plate in flywheel / clutch area. Does not vary when clutch is pressed or released, new throw out bearing and pilot bearing. thanks, steve

Do you have clutch pedal "free" play??

yes I have clutch pedal play, any other ideas, I have never had one make this noise

There were bad throwout bearings on the market for many years and you may have wound up with one. I have a tranny installed with new gears, shafts and bearings that shifts like a dream however the front input gear bearing is noisy after ~5000 miles but getting quieter. Sometimes old parts with new take a while to get friendly?

The noise might be from the trans input bearing,especially if you replaced it and left the seals in it.I always remove the seal that faces the trans lube,want to make sure it is well lubricated.

thanks for reply, this is bugging me and I hate to take it all back apart. Doesn`t the pilot bearing turn all the time when the engine is running?

Some starter Bendix drives will push the ring gear forward over time.

Remove the starter motor and inspect the ring gear on the flywheel.

Use a wire with an L bent on to the end to see if there is any gap between the back of the ring gear and the flywheel. There should not be. Also look at the starter mounting bolts to see if the ring gear has been rubbing on the end of one of them.

If you determine that this is your problem, working through the starter mounting hole, you can slowly and gently tap the ring gear back on with a very heavy hammer while someone slowly rotates the engine with the hand crank (sparkplugs out). As you work the ring gear back on, you will hear the tone of the hammer strike change as the ring gear is seated again.

The pilot bearing is fixed in the flywheel, so, yes, the outer half turns all the time that the engine is running.

The inner half of the pilot bearing turns with the transmission input shaft. So any time you are NOT stepping on the clutch, the flywheel and the input shaft turn at the same RPM and the two halves of the pilot bearing are not moving "relative to each other".

The outer part of the pilot bearing turns, relative to the inner part, every time you step on the clutch.

another model a`er said that my pressure plate may be out of adjustment (My Fingers were all even) ,he claimed it would make noise when running . Have you ever heard of this before? I will check all suggestions out tomorrow. thanks, steve
