Need some help with an AOD transmission
 

My friend George has a beautiful Duce roadster he just installed a new 284 CI Flathead. I drives an AOD trans and the trans isn't shifting right, especially when it comes to a stop. Trans pressure seems to be adj right. I remember back a few years ago their was a thread on this. Any info will help.

There is a mechanical linkage (cable) required between the carb linkage and the transmission. How is that being accounted for? If the cable is not present or not adjusted correctly, an AOD is normally not long for this world.

We went through that. My son bought the Lokar ? Locar? shifter could be Summit or Jegs
don't know but they have the cable and all that goes with it for AODs. Maybe someone
here can get a pic in the parts book what the linkage to carb looks like. I have a EAB
with automatic but that part is missing. Its only a simple bell crank, BUT has to be
timed with the throttle plates like 1:1 ratio my guess. sam

AODs rely on a cable from the throttle linkage to the transmission to send throttle position to the transmission. This is used to raise and lower its internal transmission pressure accord to throttle position. This pressure effects shifting, shift points, and, if incorrect can greatly shorten the life of the transmission. Even if an AOD has the cable but the throttle valve (TV) pressure-setting is not set properly you will burn up the transmission. AODs will not work correctly without the TV pressure being correct. Even in a stock application, such as a Mustang, if the cable bushings become worn and it gets out of adjustment, it can quickly destroy the transmission.

The AOD's can only be set with a pressure gauge, middle port on pass side of trans. Pressure should be 2 to 5 psi at idle, and when the cable is pulled I believe 5/16 of an inch, the pressure should rise to 30 or 40 psi. If you do this, the trans will work perfect, if it doesn't, it has internal problems. As others have suggested, you can't play with an AOD, it will burn up quickly.

Pretty basic thought as I don't know, how are the ATF levels?



Linkage is super sensitive, as I've found with my 08 f150
