Removal & Installation of Houdaille Shock

I am working on a 40 wagon and tying to pull the L/H axle housing. I got everything undone except for the Houdaille shock. I am looking for the best way to remove it without beating it to death because I would like to have it rebuilt before assembly. Anybody know the best way to remove it without beating it to death? All seems rusted in place. Doubt if it was ever pulled before since new.

Thanks, Phil Swanson

If it is rusted in place, what makes you think it can be rebuilt?

I need to get it off first without destroying it.

The shock itself un-bolts from the frame if that's what you are asking for, then the shock link has to be disconnected from the shock arm. I got the links off mine by turning the nut around and hitting it with a hammer. Ruined the nut but got some more from Mac's. If you are trying to remove the cover on the shock good luck, takes a special wrench for that. Al

The bolts for the links are tapered. Should be wider toward the head end.

Got it off. It looks like the thing is just frozen. Probably pretty typical. Luckily I have an NOS one and new link to replace it. Gotta do the other 3 now. Thanks, Phil Swanson
