38 starter motor disengagement noise The starter motor on my wife's 38 makes a metallic whirring and grinding noise on disengagement. I suspect the starter motor is not original. I would like any guidance before I start pulling things apart.
The vehicle is RHD and there isn't much room between the starter motor and the steering pinion (?) thingy. Many thanks in advance David Wellington NZ |

These are "Fun" to work on with the RHD set up. I have found to gain a bit more wiggle room in this area to let the 3 bolts holding the steering box. Can then drop it a little to give some clearance to remove starter motor. Exhaust could also be in the way depending on your set up. Can also drop this off. Another way to let the 2 fwd engine moubts go and get a bit more sideways clearance from steering box by moving front of engine slightly to left. Its a tight area to work on from the underneath. All the best. Phil NZ |
Re: 38 starter motor disengagement noise much appreciated phil. I take it the disengagement noise means I should pull the starter motor out?

I would say so. As could be bendix related. Maybe spring or engagement drive gear. Need to pull to inspect. Then to be sure to get a good replacement if required. Phil NZ |
Re: 38 starter motor disengagement noise Thanks Phil. I've never looked at a starter motor mechanism closely but I imagine I will be doing so soon. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for the advice.
