Re: Head Gasket for the 6:1 Iron head I would use the best gasket, although I see in 2017 brattons they recommend the modern silicone impregnated one. I have the 5:5 head with .125” bore , and I used the best.

Re: Head Gasket for the 6:1 Iron head The "silicone impregnated" gasket is a ticking time bomb. The question is not "if" it will fail, but "when". When it fails, you end up with a crankcase full of water. Mine failed after about 5 years. It just turned to goo. Took 3 weeks to clean the block and head properly for the new gasket.

BEST brand gasket, part number 573G. It's only been a little over a month, but so far so good. |

Re: Head Gasket for the 6:1 Iron head I used Snyder's silicone ringed gasket for 6+ years on the engines I built in long block form. I constantly had to remind my customers to torque the head multiple times. If they did, they had little problems with using them. Those that did not keep on a schedule to retorque them had trouble and complained about it.
I tried their new composite "Best" gasket 2+ years ago and now only use that one. It requires much less re-torquing; it usually reaches it's equilibrium after three re-torques. That said: I have about four of the silicone gaskets "new in the wrapper" if someone wants a deal! Good Day! |

The most recent Best gasket I bought for a Model A was a 509G. The only difference is the 2 small holes between cylinders 2 & 3. They still have the 573G, and it is for the Model B block. Notice in the picture there is a Best 573 on top of a Best 509. Both are GraphTite. Notice the holes in the 573 and no holes in the 509. All other holes and shape are exactly the same.

Re: Head Gasket for the 6:1 Iron head The graphite 'Best Gasket' (referred to by others here) is the one recommended to me by a respected engine rebuilder. He indicated that the silicone-impregnated one, although seductively modern with its looks, has been found to leak prematurely (as, indeed, also indicated by others here). He also mentioned that some have had good experiences with the silicone-impregnated gasket, but that good experience has not been consistent.

Re: Head Gasket for the 6:1 Iron head I use the copper spray on the Best graphite gasket with a 7:1 head. Tighten to 60bls. It does seal well. I get the head off by loosening the head nuts a few turns and turn it over with the ignition off.
