Rear End Gear Ratio

How can I tell what ratio I have in my '31 Pickup? Is there a tag anywhere?

Your rear end is probably 4.11 if it is original. There is no tag, later ones (the V8's) were stamped but I wouldn't trust the numbers. I replaced the rear end in my '31-RDPU with 3.54 gears and am very happy with the result.

If you have it apart you might consider replacing the rear spring with one from a roadster (unless you plan to use it as a truck).

Thank you for the rear springs (roadster) change out. I don't use it as a Pickup. It's one rough ride for sure.
Thanks for information never expected.

Chock the front wheels and jack the RHS rear wheel just clear ofd the ground.
Mark the tyre at 12 O'Clock.
Set hand brake to just drag a little.
Select 3rd gear.
Turn engine exactly 2 turns with the crank handle(easier if the plugs are out).
If the mark stops at 11-12 O'Clock, you have 4.11
If the mark stops at 12-1 O'Clock, you have 3.78
If the mark stops at 1-2 O'Clock, you have 3.54

Tom

What is the most desirable ratio. I drive for pleasure. It's neat when I get information - even when it's about other than asked (roadster springs)

Thanks

Don't mean to high jack this tread but speaking of springs has anyone had experience with an 8 leaf spring in a Tudor that should have a 10 leaf pack. Will it ride better but still sit right when not loaded.

The quick answer to your questions is No, ...and No. Start a new thread and we will get into why this is.

Fitz, the best ratio for you depends on the type of driving you do. I like 4.11's and an overdrive, gives good performance around town and is great on the highway.

No overdrive. I drive just around the city, no expressways at all. For my Pickup, only will drive secondary roadways. I've no modifications, except for a Randy Gross steering box. Am very interested in the opnions of others whom are stock.
Thanks
