Rear Spring Perch on Axle I need to replace the rear spring shackles on my '29 CCPU. The perch has an old repair that welded the shackle in the perch. Been reading multiple threads about perch repair.
Q: Is the rear perch a permanent piece of the axle housing or able to be removed from the housing? Any info greatly appreciated. |
Re: Rear Spring Perch on Axle The spring perch is not removable. I do not understand why anyone would weld a shackle to a perch. A picture would help.

Re: Rear Spring Perch on Axle 1 Attachment(s)
The spring perch was welded to the housing when they were manufactured and is not removable.

Re: Rear Spring Perch on Axle DC 69, just a heads up, this repair requires that you remove the rear spring from the perches and is a VERY DANGEROUS JOB THAT REQUIRES THE PROPER SPRING COMPRESSOR. Ed

Re: Rear Spring Perch on Axle X2 ^^^
I do not know if you have any Model A reference books. Here would be a good one to buy. It has detailed pictures and descriptions of each system. https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/mechanics-handbook Also the catalogs from the parts vendors such as Snyders and Brattons Have good parts breakdowns and illustrations. They are free for the asking. John |
Re: Rear Spring Perch on Axle Thanks for the replys. Still checking options...
Is the front spring perch shackle housing the same size as the rear spring perch housing? If so, would it be a viable option to cut off bad rear perch shackle housing and weld front perch shackle housing in it's place? Thanks for your input. |
Re: Rear Spring Perch on Axle Rears are wider.

Re: Rear Spring Perch on Axle Just cut the eye along with shock mount off the housing; weld on an appropriately sized piece of DOM, weld the shock mount on; good to go.
Maybe a good time to switch to a bronze bushing too. The front eyes are narrower than the rear; besides the new ones are cast mystery metal and who would really want to cut up a nice original perch bolt. |
