Gas valve on position It the valve facing up or toward the gas filter bowl?
Thank you |
Re: Gas valve on position When the handle is in line with the supply line the fuel is cut off.Like when you run your finger across your throat for the kill it signal.Side to side cuts it off.Hanging straight down means down and out, letting the gas out.

Re: Gas valve on position horizontal or "UP is OFF", vertical or DOWN allows the gas to flow.

This should make it clear for the valve under the tank.
Photo on the left valve is ON. Photo on the right valve is OFF |
Re: Gas valve on position My gas valve is just the opposite of what is shown. I don't know why, but after driving the car for 25 years I'm not going to change it now. The car was restored about 50 years ago and I assume the valve was put in at that time.
What I don't understand is how it could work, being backwards. Marty |
Re: Gas valve on position Someone has simply changed or filed the handle position to fit in another position.
|
Re: Gas valve on position Marty, some old reproduction gas valves are that way. They have the two holes in the tapered bung clocked in a different position in relation to the handle position.I have a couple of those, one is so poorly made it was unusable, the other was very well made, but you would have to remember to use it properly for that particular car.I have 4 A's on the road, having one oddball would be hard to remember for me.

Re: Gas valve on position My gas shut off valve is also opposite, was like that when i bought the truck 50 years ago, most shut off valves weather nat. gas or water if the handle is parallel with the supply pipe the valve is on.

Re: Gas valve on position Shake your head up & down meaning 'yes' .... gas is on.
Shake your head side to side meaning 'no'....gas is off. Got something else, get the correct gas valve. |
Re: Gas valve on position The valve originally was as stated earlier in the thread, however after over 80 years there are a lot of fixes on our As and so don't take anyone's advice on this, check your own. Simply remove gas line ar carb and check for gas flow in either direction. Will also give you a good opportunity to check for leaking valve and for proper gas line insertion at carb. Check also for good flow.

Re: Gas valve on position I go by what I read on the forum a few years ago. If the handle is vertical, you are like a rocket set for takeoff. Horizontal and you will have no ignition to your rocket.

Re: Gas valve on position Gas valve down is on!

Re: Gas valve on position Keith,
Thanks for your post on this subject. I thought I was the only one with a backwards valve. You know, when I bought my car, 25 years ago, I had no idea how a model A worked. I didn't know the gas valve on from off! I knew there was a spark lever but I didn't know retard from advance! Now I know that my gas valve is - start it "up" and shut it "down." The things I've learned! Marty |

The early shut off valve works the opposite of the later valves.
