29 Tudor Door Window Channel question
 

I bought the 'Door Felt Retainer' from Bert's recently, and I'm not sure where it goes.... Both doors have rust damage around the top. The 'retainers' are labeled as needing a small rivet to attach. Are they suppose to 'pop into' the upper part of the door, and I drill a hole to attach them? Was there something there originally that did the same job? I also bought the felt from Bert's and they come with 'hooks' at both ends, unlike the quarter window felts (one hook, one key). My doors have some of the felt retainers still attached lower in the door, some are missing there too.

Chuck,

Are these the streachable kind or the non-streachable kind? With the original types, they were the streachable kind with hooks on both ends. You could either hook the top or the bottom and streach it to the oppisite end.

I do not like the non-streachable kind and prefer the streachable channels.

As a matter of fact, I went as far as making my own from the old originals.

There should be within the window sides hook areas and they should just attach to these spots. No rivets used originally. Not sure if the original style hooks are being made but think they are.

Their catalog description is pretty complete. I would not know how to say it any better. Maybe someone else can. Did you take your old window channels off? You can get a good idea by looking at the old ones.

I guess my question is 'HOW' do they fit? Do they just 'pop in'? I only have my car to look at, so I don't know just what is missing from it now. I can probably pop them in, but I don't see a 'top' vs. 'bottom' to them.... Steve, my question is more about the Felt Door Retainer than the Felt Strip itself. The strip is the NON-stretchable type.... Sorry to be so vague in my description. I feel like the Blind Man and the Elephant - I just don't know what it's suppose to look like... Heck...I am confused to...Why would one go on the front side of the left door and the other go on the back side of the right door...I would think both would go either front or back.

Guess I will have to go check some doors.

Well I looked a a few doors and it appears to me that the channel that you have is for doors that are completely rusted out in the area for which these repro channels would go. The 1929 doors that I have show the channels as part of the major construction and not an individual part.

If I were you Chuck...I would call the parts house you got these from and ask them to give you a more detailed description of their assembly.

Hey Guys,
This is the metal channel that the window felt mounts into. Ordinarily you don't need these unless your door is so rusted they are not usable, or the metal channel has been broken out of the door (or the rear window, as in a tudor).
This is the channel that accepts the "hook" on the window felt.
I had to replace one of these on my 29 CC pickup because the original had been broken out of the door, and the window was gone.

These fit into the door with a rivet at the bottom that locates their position. Then they are spot welded in several places up the door frame. You can see by the curvature of the piece where it fits flat against the door frame... that's where it gets a spot weld.

You're welcome Chuck. After installing the metal channels, the window felts will attach with hooks that are riveted to the window felts. I find it easiest to hook the bottom first. The top can be tough to stretch into place. I generally straighten the top hook so that it's 90 degrees to the felt, then slide it in place, then rebend the top hook back down. It makes it a 5 minute job. The window felts do not get glued in the channels. Only the top rubber is glued.

I needed to replace the window regulators in a 30 coupe. One door is missing the metal channels. Since the car is otherwise restored, i'm planning on using pop rivets in place of the spot welds.
