Inside OEM Style Repop Battery
 

My OEM style repop battery finally gave up the ghost and, since there was a long lead time on a replacement, I had to get a lead acid instead. Man, is it ugly ... I'm saving my allowance for a 'proper' replacement.

I decided to carefully cut the repop apart just to see what's inside, but still be able to use it as a display. I thought you might like to have a look.

An teeny weeny AGM battery, set sideways, stuck to the bottom of the case with about an inch of epoxy and wired to the external top terminals.

This AGM is about the size of the battery in my lawn tractor!! After seeing this, I'm surprised it was able to spin over 390 cubes for the past 10 years!!

How did you manage to do such a nice clean and even cut ?


I knew there was an AGM inside as you can see it thru the top of the battery caps.


I too am in the process of slicing one apart but its a dirty messy job.

I bought this one and another for my TBird at Carlisle 10 or so years ago. The one in the Bird is still goin' strong! The supplier is now out of business, but this guy https://batterycentralmall.com/Batte...ript/S60K.html has taken over (with a $200 increase in price it appears).


I cut the top off about 1" down at the 'seam' with a thin blade hack saw. I couldn't get the AGM out because of the 1" of epoxy holding it, so I drilled 4 holes thru the bottom and used a jig saw with medium toothed blade to cut around the battery. It dropped right out. I got some black silicone and glued the top back on the case.



If I was to do it again, I'd just drill the 4 holes and jig saw it out, leaving the top and sides of the case intact. Keep close to the edge along the long sides, the AGM is pretty tight in there. You should be able to snip the wires to the top terminals.

I wonder now if you can get a replacement AGM battery like that and stuff it back in your case?

My portable "jumper" box went south and I took it apart and found a small battery also. Would hold a charge all winter and start any car. Found a replacement at an Exide dealer.

It’s nothing but a guess looking at the picture, but it looks a lot like the Odessey AGM I use. 10 years and starting a big block is no big deal if they’re disconnected over the winter. Not cheap except in the long run.

I have had one of those Odyssey batteries that size also for a number of years. It has been starting a 302 Ford with no problem. I think it has about 600 cca's in that small package. I keep it on a battery tender when not in use.

And I thought they were actually lead acid batteries. Makes sense. I doubt you can ship an actual lead acid battery unless it was dry. Then how would you bring it to life?

We used to do that in remote areas with the boats. The local guy kept the acid in stock, and in a shorter time they flew or water shipped the battery in. He filled it, charged it, and we took it from there. Wasn’t cheap, but apparently a barrel of acid wasn’t much more than a quart to transport. Not much choice on the inside passage to Alaska if something failed.
