Fiber timing gear
 

Can a fiber timing gear loose a couple teeth and the car still run. I went to start my 29AA to go to the Pacific Mo car show Saturday and it would not fire. I cleaned the points off and it started up. When i advanced the spark lever about half way down it would start to run bad. If i pushed the lever up it would smooth out and run better. It seems as if the timing is to far advanced. I checked the timing and it is good. Did not want to remove the timing cover if it could be something else.

It might run if off by a tooth but not well. I would check the dist. out more as it sounds like something moved on you.

Points gap .018 to .022 , check the fixed point mount,mine was cracked and the points gap would change by itself ! When the points gap closes less than .018 I’ve had to give it more advance with the hand lever.

[B]Take off the little timing gear side cover, rotate the engine & check for missing teeth !

Back in the 80s, many upper distributor shafts were made, that had a pressed on ring under the cam. Any good shaft (and all shafts made currently) have this ring machined as part of the shaft (all one piece). If you have one of these older two piece upper shafts, at some point the little pressed on ring comes loose from the shaft, and moves with the cam, thus changing the cam timing. Very frustrating and confusing deal to trouble shoot if you have never seen it happen before. Best way to see if this is what you have is take the distributor out, remove the cam , and pull the shaft down and if you have this little ring pressed on, the shaft will fall out the bottom, and the ring will fall out the top. Buy a new upper shaft, install it, and no more problems.

check the wire under the top plate in the distributor for shorts
