Steering wheel
 

My steering wheel likes to leave black stripes on my pants. I put a sanding sealer on it to try and seal it, but not sure it is doing the job. What would be the best paint to put on the wheel as a finish? Thanks, Paul

Do you think it might be the orginal wheel? Are there any cracks or is there separation?

What year is your car?

The obvious answer would be to wear black pants. That being said, maybe a clear lacquer finish in semi gloss? You can get it in a rattle can. If you want to go deluxe maybe some two part urethane modern stuff.

Hi Paul, I had the same situation and bought a leather wrap for the steering wheel, not only cured that problem but it is much more comfortable in warmer weather, looks good and was any easy install. Just another thought.

The steering wheel may be original. It does have one small crack. The car is a 1930.

my dad has repaired and refinished many steering wheels he uses dupont urethane primers, urethane base coat, urethane clear it wears like iron it will never come off, here are some samples of the steering wheels that he has refinished

Paul, I have tried to fix a number of wheels over the years that have had the same problems you are looking at

Painting will work for a while put will start coming off, and the cracks will grow.

A 1930 wheel is easy to replace. There are some really good new replacements available from the suppliers. Restoration of a wheel will mostlikely cost more and you will still have an 88 year old steering wheel.

I replaced the wheel on our keeper 1929 Sport Coupe thirty plus years ago. Still looks new. No black on my hands, no cracks.

If you do replace it, save the old wheel. Enjoy.

I painted a 61 Impala wheel and used it on my 55 Chevy back in 1965, and it never wore off or chipped. I used Tempo car touch up paint, but haven't seen that brand in years.

I had the same problem with my 1929 Special Coupe. I did the same as JtownJoe. I bought my cover from Wheelskins in black for $59.00. This cover laces to the inside , looks very good and is very comfortable, also solves staining.

For what its worth, I used a rattle can of black lacquer. It is a hard paint. I put about 5 coats on the wheel and it has stood up very nicely. Some day when I have some extra money I will purchase a new repro. Ed

I had a scared and scratched wheel on my car. I removed the wheel first then I used simple green to clean it first, repaired the marks with body filler, sanded it with 600 grit wet or dry and the painted it with two coats of Dupli-color black caliper paint. Yes, caliper paint! Gives a nice semi-gloss finish and has looked great for two years now. Wears like iron no kidding.

In the '60's - guy cut his Chev steering wheel rings off to make it look like a Cessna's flight control wheel, when the SP's (AirForce)saw it, made his fix that back. Took a pair of bike handle bar hand covers, cut out the ends and slipped the removed pieces back (for removal when off-base).

twine wrap it, then clear lacquer to seal it. looks an feels good
