Lift points - Model A
 

Hey fellas and ladies too-

I'm having difficulty identifying accessible lift points on my A. I am grateful to have a 10,000 lb 2 post lift in my shop - but the arms aren't quite long enough to engage the axles - even if the wheels are removed. As you may be aware, Ford placed several obstacles in the way of the frame. I've finally found some points that might work - but wanted to review if anyone has found better points. I decided to engage the front axle - far out by the wheels. Also I found some frame contact points - but they are in front of the rear end. I've attached several pictures and would love some opinions. I'm not worried about damaging the car - these are all strong points, I'm more worried about lifting safely. If the engine is in the car, I think these are good lift points - if the engine is out, I'm wondering if the rear end will be too heavy. Thanks for taking a minute to help me out and if possible let me know the lift points you have used in the past.

They lift nicely with a post under the frame at the side motor mounts,and with the posts at the rear on the frame against the outside of the radius rods,right where the rods cross under the frame.You do need the extensions to clear the running boards.Don't open or close the doors when the car is on the lift.

You do not want to lift them on the front axles, the arms will not be long enough and the car will not be centered.

Similar to Keith. My right front arm just touches the exhaust pipe as it comes down into the muffler. The right rear is 3 or 4 inches to the front side of the shock. Just as the frame starts to go up. Kind of tricky to get the extensions in place in some locations.

I like the lift posts ahead of the radius arms because a lot of times I have it on the lift to take the rear end out.I lift the car,unhook everything,and just loosen the spring U-bolts.I set it back down,finish unscrewing the U-bolt nuts,and pick the car up off the rear end.I do clamp my post extensions to the frame with vise-grips at the rear.Somehow I have this idea that once I remove the rear end there will be too much weight hanging on the front.In reality that's just not true.I have picked the car back up on the lift with no rear and tried to pick up the now lightened rear section.Two of us can't budge it on a pickup or roadster.

BTW those are a great place to place jack stands ! If your a poor boy like me :-(
Just back or in front of the radius rods on the frame, letting you to remove front or rear axles.

I for sure would NOT want to be under that where you have in your third picture, way too far forward on the lift and completely unsafe. As others have said use close to rear motor mounts for front and closer to rear on back utilizing the frame with spacers.

That is one strange/scary set up for lifting with those extensions, yuck.:eek:

Why do you say that? There is 1-1/2" of thread engagement.

I have people say the same thing about my setup.It does look scary,but when I put mine up a foot or so,I grab the car and shake and thrash it around,I can see it ain't going anywhere.Those extensions wouldn't be built and sold if they were a problem.I would like to put my front lift points on the A like you have them,ahead of the motor mounts.I can't on my lift because it is so wide I use up all my arm length swinging the arms in to meet the frame.

Josh, my set up is about identical to the photo that Bob C sent.

The only difference is I am using an Atlas lift and my lift isn't as beefy as Mitch's lift shown in the photo. The lift points are identical.

Looking at the lean in those extensions they must not be very rigid.

Mine are and without any sway.

And - success! I was finally able to get my Phaeton lifted thanks to all the good advice!

For future readers, here is a summary of the lift point recommendations from others that worked for me:

Front lift points - The passenger one is tricky to avoid nonstructural parts. Essentially, find the frame very near the rear engine mount on both sides and use that. Use careful placement of your pads/arms. You'll also need extensions to not impact the running boards. I used the Bendpak long extension as well as a short extension.

Rear lift points - Use the frame just to the rear of the radius rods running to the rear wheels. Again, you'll need extensions to avoid the running boards.

Also, to avoid torquing the chassis, I agree with the recommendation to keep the doors all securely closed while lifted.
