Widened wheels

I am widening my back wheels. They are 16 inch 5 x 5 1/2 and are 4 inches wide. Rather than cut the rim is there a rim out there that will take my centre.

Re: Widened wheels

rather than trying to re-invent the "wheel" by jury rigging a wider wheel/rim onto your wheel hubs, I would suggest you use '58-64 Ford F100 wheels. The F100 wheels are 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern and can be found in widths up to 6.5 widths. The '40-48 passenger car hub caps will fit perfectly on the F100 wheels.

If you are a member of the H.A.M.B., search there. There are literally dozens of threads with answers. Some of them may not be obvious; I found one that said 16X6.5 rims from a Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser are a perfect fit. There were a lot of others.

I don't think so.

Re: Widened wheels

I think there may be some early F-100 pickup wheels ('48-'53) that are 16X5. The wheel manufacturers here in the states are making 16, 17 and 18 inch rims. Perhaps you could contact them and purchase just the outers to fit with your centers.

Re: Widened wheels

The '58-66 F100 wheels are generally 5 on 5.5", 15", however, Ford did offer a special 16" option on the F100's.. The F100 wheels '67 through '95/96 are also 5 on 5.5", 15", however, they have external hub cap knobs in lieu of the internal.
I am not positive, but I don't think the EV8F hub caps will fit on a FJ40 wheel.

Re: Widened wheels

The outers are called bands and very limited in the inner drop center dia.Check with Wheel Smith in Corona,CA or McLean in Fresno,CA.You might be better off just having wheels made up than trying to make something fit that does not exist.Another issue is what type of hubcaps do you want to use?

Re: Widened wheels

When I needed some special 16 inch wheels made and I wanted to keep the original centers so the hub caps fit properly I sent the 16 inch centers to Gary McLean/Rally America and had new outer bands installed. They were perfect with the offset I wanted. It's been a while so I can't remember the cost.

Re: Widened wheels

TJ is right. 49-53 F1 pickups had an optional wheel that was 16x5. Mercury had a 16x5 also. 1941 I think. Beware of those who say they can install your
centers in an outer rim that will fit. What will likely happen is they will have to turn the outside diameter of your center down to make it fit. I found this out the hard way. Depending on how wide you want your wheels to be, I would contact Wheelsmith in Ca. They offer 16" wheels in several different widths in a 5 1/2" pattern. www.thewheelsmith.com

A lot of work to widen them.

Just buy a new rim and change over centres.

It is so easy you can do it yourself.

Of course it won't, but it doesn't matter because the only part used is the wheel hoop.

Summit Racing is also a dealer for Wheel Vintiques.. Whatever you do don't order wheels from US Wheel. Your hubcaps will not fit.
