Model B Engine Question
 

I have a chance to purchase a Model B engine. The car & engine was rebuild less than 1000 miles ago and the owner of the car is going to install a flathead V*. My question, is this engine compatible with the stock Model A bell housing and is just a simple "Bolt In" type of job? :confused:

Chuck, you just use the Model A flywheel housing and bolt it right up. I've been running one for over 25 years. Runs great and the extra HP is nice. Now with "inserts" you can run a Model A engine and put inserts in and run the higher compression heads also.

The oil pans are different so you will need to remove the rear flywheel housing from the B pan or enlarge the A pan to fit the rear seal. If using the A pan you also need to dent the pan so the rods have clearance also. If you decide to use the B pan drill out the spot welds for a clean job and if you have no interest in the lower flywheel housing I would be interested in it.

This is GREAT! was hoping it would just "Bolt In" my engine is pretty tired and I am getting such a super deal on this engine I just can't pass on it, it comes with everything and really runs super.

I will just use the "B" pan and remove the housing, and yes I will be glad to give to you when I do the job, will not be till the fall, just get back to me in October, better to use email [email protected]

Here is a picture of a Model A with a cut off Model B pan and a Model A flywheel housing. I cut off the pan to be sure there were not leaks around the spot welds if I removed them. Note that this was done a VERY long time ago when Model B pans were common. Have you tried posting that you would like to swap an original pan for one that was cut off?

I second Charlie suggestion. In fact, I have such a prepared B pan, not as nice as what Charlie shows. If you did not live on the opposite side of the states, I'd send it to you, maybe trade. The suggestion of modifying an A pan for B use is good plan also. I have 3 excellent A pans, if needed. I used such on a hot B engine, and it is leak free/perfect ! Options are good and you have some available !

Okay Charlie & Hardtimes as of this reply I have not even picked up the engine it is still in the car, so as soon as the guy pulls the engine I will pick it up, pull the pan and we can swap, but not time the fall this is my busy season so will not have time to do anything car related

Since the engine is still in the car, try to buy his transmission along with the engine. It is unlikely he is going to use the B transmission with the V8 engine. You can then drop both engine and trans in your car as a package. You would get synchronized 2nd & high, better gear ratios than A trans and you would only have to buy a pedal adapter since the B trans has no mount for pedals.

I like your suggestion but I would like to take the liberty of expanding a little on your post. It is unlikely he is going to use the B transmission with the V8 engine because it won't bolt up, the cases are different. He might transfer the gears to a V8 transmission case but that is unlikely since the later gears are a better choice. This assumes that the gears in the B transmission are original. It also will be necessary to buy or fabricate a mount for the wishbone since the B wishbone is mounted on the frame.

Hi Richard, I am sure he will also sell the transmission and I did not know a "Pedal Adapter" was available, where can I get one?

This may be more complicated than I can handle, really was hoping to just bolt it in, I actually do not have any issues with the stock transmission and if I do get the trans will offer it up to you guys for exactly what I pay for it
