1940 Ford Sedan Headliner

When mounting a new headliner, should the bows be tight against the factory sound deadening material attached to the inner roof or mounted down a bit to facilitate stretching the headliner cloth? Don't remember how it was when removed months ago. Carl

As I recall, in my 40 coupe the headliner bows may have touched the OEM (tar paper) insulation but were not so tight that the headliner couldn't be pulled taunt. The bows are numbered and do pivot a little bit on the mounting screws. 40 sedan folks may be more helpful.

The bows usually touch the sound deadening material, but not so tight that you can't move them. The bows need to have some slight movement so as to get the headliner tight from front to back.
