Starter band question
 

I have 6 or 7 starter bands. About half are 1 3/16" wide and the other half are 1 3/8" wide. The Judging Standards don't describe anything about the band width and only have the 1 3/16" band dimension shown on one of the pictures. Does anyone know if the 1 3/8" wide bands were Ford made or maybe aftermarket. It is hard to believe that several of my 1 3/8" bands are aftermarket, as why would anyone need to replace a part like this.

I was looking through the box of bands left from when I used to do a lot of rebuilding -looking for date codes--I have a lot of them because I bought a cheap box of "repro" bands---they were clean, not rusty and it was "cheaper" to use a new one than the time it took to clean/paint,de-dent, at the time it was less than 5 cents each -----but in the pile of used bands there are the 2 widths, and i was thinking I have to look as i was moving the core pile to see if originals have the differences too

Early starter used a wider band. I thought it was talked about in the Standards, but my book isn't handy now.

From June through September 1928, a third type of
starter was used. It had bushings, the 112" Abell type
starter drive, a new style end plate attached with two
long fillister head bolts, a removable end bearing cap, a
1- 1/ 16" wide cover band with only the mid portion of the
ends bent up which was fastened with a No. 8-32 x 1- 118"
round head bolt and 118" x 11132" hex nut.

The fourth starter type was introduced October 1928
beginning with engine number 492511. This starter was
used through the end of production. It was the same as the
third type except it had a 5/8" Bendix type starter drive.
The removable end cap was eliminated by mid 1929.
The multiple disc clutch flywheel was reduced in size
behind the ring gear to provide the necessary clearance
for the larger starter drive. The cover band was widened
to 1-3/ 16" in April 1929. The screws were o. 8-32 (No.
10-32 after mid 1930) x 1- 114" and used a 1/8'1 x 3/811
square nut.

The cover bands were smooth into February 1930. In
February two alignment lugs or dimples were added
to each end of the band. Approximately June 1930
the number of dimples was reduced to one on each
end placed symmetrically opposite.
