From the Model T forum

Why did you lot change to LHD mid stream and put the manifolds on the wrong side so we can't run twin updraughts?

Re: Rhd

Mid-stream of what? We started LHD before the Model T days, putting it where it belongs!

Re: Rhd

Jim, I think we need to go a long further back, I put the blame firmly on Napoleon Bonaparte.:) (He never made it across the channel here which explains a lot of other left overs we have eg feet, pounds and miles. As has been discussed before on the forum his idea of metric time units didn't stick)

Hi Guys,
I really cant understand why the world has not standardised the LH/RH issue many, many years ago.
It is obviously too late now.

Are you sure it's too late? If countries can convert to metric, changing sides shouldn't be too difficult. It could be done gradually. Trucks and busses first and cars a month later:rolleyes:

That one really made me laugh Synchro! You have a wicked sense of humour.
The easiest solution preventing accidents when tourists get confused is for everyone to drive down the middle, like they do in India

Jim, No, I don't think the US will ever change. I'm afraid you have been left behind but it's not too late. A change would be challenging for we older folk but by the time our children have been using it for a few years, they will wonder why it wasn't done earlier.
Back to LHD/RHD, I have always believed that Henry Ford started the LHD for cars in the US when he brought out the Model T. Up till then, all American cars were RHD. To support that, here is a link to pictures of 1908 Model S cars - the year before the Model T was released with its steering wheel on the other side.
