Re: They don't make them like they used to... A portable surf life saving club room?

Re: They don't make them like they used to... Looks like Cyrillic letters on the side so I'd guess it's a GAZ (Russian Ford). If somebody can translate it, might give a clue as to the purpose of the tower.

I know you're joking but that does kinda make sense - haul your forced laborers around in the box and use the tower to watch them while they're working. My thought was to haul tools, etc in the box and use the tower to access tall stuff - kinda like a bucket truck. Or it might be for military use - a command/reconnaissance vehicle or some such. |
Re: They don't make them like they used to... Pole service truck? A telegraph, telephone, and power-line, mobile elevated work platform unit; for cable installation and maintenance....? Military? Prob, but what wasn't back in the USSR? (Or today?) Great rig!

Re: They don't make them like they used to... How about a mobile gallows?

I'll give you a hint, the top word written on the side "аварийная" means "Emergency". |
Re: They don't make them like they used to... I think the truck is parked in front of the tower. Check the board angles.
Plus it is not braced enough for travel. (up hills and cornering) |
Re: They don't make them like they used to... Curtis, agreed
The focal point is off in the depth to me Could be wrong! Often am |

Nah - no framework on the tower to hang the noose. :D |
Re: They don't make them like they used to... Okay, on the side of the AA it says:
Emergency [repair vehicle] K.G.ZH.D (which stands for: Sino-German Railway) |

I dunno. Looks like there are two ladders offset from each other - one from the ground to the roof of the box and the other from the roof to the tower. If the tower is part of the truck, it does look like it's offset to the passenger side - that would put it closer to the work if it was for accessing tall stuff. The X-braces on three sides look pretty sturdy. |

I can think of some RR stuff it could be used to repair, but none of them would constitute an emergency. Don't keep us in suspense - inquiring minds want to know! :D |
Re: They don't make them like they used to... Electric bus or trolley line repair rig, so yes if there was a line problem it would be an emergency. We had very similar units here in the US for doing overhead line repair.

To be clear, it says on the side of the AA: "аварийная" the adjective "Emergency". Meaning in Russian an emergency/service/repair vehicle. Below that is written "К.Г.Ж.Д" which stands for "Sino-German Railway". |
Re: They don't make them like they used to... A vehicle to watch the NASCAR races???? hahhaha
