Late 31 Carb-rebuild HI guys, I need a couple answers here; 1st some one drilled out the carb mounting flanges to 5/8 in. can I use a heli -coil to bring them back for the correct bolt? OR can I fill the holes with weld and redrill and tap?? 2nd- I'm gonna try my hand at welding a broken carb. flange , its my understanding that I need to get the cast beyond cherry red, in doing so will I melt the brass plugs ?? if so how do I remove the plugs? what size drill bit is the small one? and is it a big deal to remove and replace the plugs.I never did this work before and I don't want to destroy the carbs. thanks a lot THE HOOCH

Re: Late 31 Carb-rebuild I would use a good core. The problems you have tell me the junk carb is a door stop.

Re: Late 31 Carb-rebuild A helicoiled carb works fine. I would find a n experienced welder to do the flange. If it’s broken near the idle jet, then that’s a problem. The late 31 has a thinner flange, and breaks easier. I’ve had a welded B carb( which also has the thin flange) and it rebroke later.

Re: Late 31 Carb-rebuild I have late zenith carburettor on which one of the mounting tabs was broken. Out of 6 mm (1/4") steel, I made a spacer the same shape and size as the gasket that goes between the carb and manifold, then brazed that to the top. No problems.;)
