Gas line

How far should the gas line from the gas tank go into the tank? On my 37 sdn the line goes in about 2.5”. Should it go in to the bottom of the tank just off the bottom? Thanks,Don

Re: Gas line

About 1/2" past the ferrule is more than enough.

Is the fitting in the stock location on the bottom of the tank? Almost sounds like your talking about a fitting on the top of the tank (aftermarket tank). If that is the case, the line needs to go to the bottom of the tank.

'37 Ford tank has the outlet on the side of the tank - front - about 5" from the bottom. The line does not need to extend anymore than 1/2" in to the tank.

Well, that would make a difference! For some reason I was thinking of a later tank!

Yes Kube is right. Is there a pickup pipe that extends to the bottom of the tank?

There is. It is integral of the tank. You should be able to see at minimum, part of it, by peering through the sending unit hole.

Re: Gas line

Most internal tank pick up tubes in the more modern Fords have this feature. They do act as a stand pipe but only about the diameter of the tube off the bottom. It's important to leave a space for water and other heavier than fuel debris to settle.

Aircraft tanks have a sump on the bottom with a water drain valve but automobiles seldom have a feature like this, if ever.

I think the aftermarket tanks the tube has to go near bottom of tank.
There has been problem with 1/2 tank of gas and no gas to start.
