KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

1 Attachment(s)
The KRW BV-121 Spring Shackle Stud Replacer consists of a yoke (C-clamp device) and 4 guide bushings. I have the yoke (see attached photo) but no bushings. If anyone has a complete original BV-121, I'd much appreciate getting accurate dimensions from the bushings, so I can duplicate them.

(I can estimate the dimensions based on shackle stud and spring perch measurements (and guided by the illustration in the KRW catalog). However, I'd like to duplicate the KRW parts as closely as possible.)

Thanks,
John R.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

John, that's a nice one to have, but hanging on the wall would likely be more useful than in the garage. That was made for back in the day when shackle studs weren't rust-locked in place. Anymore, a hot wrench is the preferred method: Get the stud red hot, then a pair of vice grips twists it right out.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

John,
I have the drawings to replicate the bushings (for the KRW tool) required to install new shackle studs.
Recently, I'd installed a set of four in less than one hour.
This tool is indispensable - the sort that makes a guy wonder how this task can be done (properly) without it.
I'll private message you tomorrow.

Alan, The BV-121 is for installing new studs, not removing the old ones.

adapters for the 7/8" and 3/4" shackles. you can make additional adapters for removal.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

I disagree with John R, I used my BV-121 for removal of old and installation of new. I agree with Kube, it would be a real war doing the job without this. Especially the rear axle housing shackle bore, the spring ends are easy as they can expand a little.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

I also believe that the tool was intended for both removal and installation of the studs. I've used the BV-121 tool over and over for both purposes. The V-170 removal tool shown in Terry's illustration was a 1935 addition to the KRW tool catalogue as the BV-121 tool cannot be used on the front axle studs starting with the 1935 models because of the close proximity of the front axle to the stud housing.

Given the increasing scarcity of the original NOS Ford studs, the BV-121 tool is essential as its virtue is that it keeps the required alignment to prevent the steel sleeve on the stud from binding and swelling, which spell the end of the usefulness of the stud.

I do not know what I would do without one.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

Well, I stand corrected! I should have known that I'd be slapped down for making such a negative statement about a KRW tool! It is a very satisfying experience to come up against a task that almost solves itself with a KRW tool in hand. As Ford's arrangement with Wilson mandated a tool for every job, there were some, of course, that were in higher demand than others, so I am humbled now to be informed that the BV-121 is in fact, not one of the "Others"!

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

I will admit that I created a separate set of guides for the removal of the studs using the BV-121.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

I have the KRW tool specifically designed to remove the studs. While it works quite well, I have never thought it was a "required" tool. The installing tool? Yep, to install the studs correctly, it remains high on my "indispensable" list.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

I have a BV-121 but missing the guide bushings for installation and removal of the shackle studs, so I would also appreciate to have the dimensions in order to duplicate them.

Thanks!

In my original post, I had a simple request: accurate dimensions from original BV-121 guide bushings. I'd much appreciate getting such. Thanks.

John, I have attached the drawing that clearly indicates both bushings required to install perch pins.

Now I have a simple request of you or anyone so inclined to make these...
How about sending me one of the (smaller of the two) bushings? Mine is pretty much 'shot".

Thanks.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

Mike, Thanks very much for the drawing! Since one of your bushings is worn out, do you have any recommendations about the grade of steel I should use in making these?
I'll be glad to make an extra for you.

If I recall correctly I made mine out of stress proof steel. You must realize, I have used this perhaps 30, maybe 40 times. It (the bushing) will last longer but it is becoming mushroomed.

Mike,
I'm also very grateful for your drawing! It's very hard to find parts like this here in Sweden where I'm located. Thanks, Lars

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

I wish I could find the 4 guide bushings / adapters for my recently acquired BV-121 tool. Has anyone made duplicates? They would be worth replicating. I'm sure I'm not the only one that would buy a couple sets of them.

Re: KRWilson Shackle Stud Replacer BV-121

On mine the axle housing :has a sleeve of course rust welded only way was slit it with the torch. Genuine Ford shackle kit uses no sleeve design change I guess.

I machined A bushing driver but my spring was off the car. It is very very similar to Kube’s drawing. I used a Grade 5 3/4” bolt and cut the threads off. I then machined about 1-1/4” lenght of the body too .73 (?). Then I notched the end to fit the outer body of the bushing nice and even and flush PLUS on old worn out bushings where the stud is not centered, it puts everything back in alignment and centered. Then I bored the hole in the center and tapped it 3/8-24 thread, then bored the bigger opening to accept the square shank of the stud. I used it in my 20 ton shop press, had both bushings out in about 30 seconds.
