Red Steering Wheel Question
 

I am restoring a VE28 (Dec 27) car and am confused as to the proper steering wheel. I was told that the earliest red wheels were different, something about where the spokes attach to the rim with a different corner radius? Can anyone describe this what this is? Perhaps a photo would be helpful.

From the early 28 section 2016 RG&JS
The "red" steering wheel had no relief where the spokes met the rim. The spokes were narrower, 13/16" instead of 1". The progression of reddish brown steering wheels is as follows:
• Beginning of production through January 1928 - Grooved rim, narrow spokes no "V" at the spoke/rim junctions.

Red steering wheel used from the end of January 1928 to the end of February 1928. Grooved rim 13/16" narrow spokes. V-joints at the spoke and rim junction. Early wheel did not have the V-joint.

I would suggest that you buy a copy of the Restoration Guide and Judging Standards from either of the national clubs, or from most parts vendors.
The guide will answer tons of questions and has lots of clear photos to help you.

Henry Ford usually made changes for economic reasons but the early Fords had many changes to improve the original designs. I made a list of changes with dates for my February 14 1928 Tudor sedan there were many chances every month and a lot of one two or three month wonders. That’s the beauty of the early Fords. All Fords are unique because of the change that continued to the end of production.
