Orcas Island, WA

I will be moving to Orcas Island, WA next year. Are any of you on the island?

It's a nice place. I have been to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island many times. Just think of the opportunities you will have to educate people on the ferries about Model A's. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone on Orcas.

Wouldn't salt air be a big problem for rusting cars?

Tom, For the cars that sit out in the weather, the salt air quickly rusts them away. For those that regularly drive their cars and garage them away from the rain and salt air, no problem at all. Our 1929 Model A Tudor came from Orcas Island in 1968, and I bought it from the original owner. It spent most of its life outside in the island salty air. The only rust that it had was the floor pan under the back seat. An eight inch patch fixed the rust hole and we have been driving rust free tudor ever since. We drive it year round in the rain and in the snow. For our bright work, we have to wax it once a year to keep it fresh.

Isn't an Island just a small Continent?

I'm going with Keith's approach, a garage, periodic wash-downs, wax, and an occasional rust prayer...

My wife and I stayed at Orcas island on a vacation last year. It is a beautiful place. We stopped at a small place and ate and noticed a large picture of several ladies driving a 1929 Phaeton in the 1955 Orcas island historical parade. We later found the same picture in a historical book, which I bought.
On a tour of the island we came across an open garage on a side road with a nice 1930/31 Tudor parked in it. Never could find the owner.
Orcas is indeed a special place and you will not be the only Model A owner there.

Doug, We also own four Stanley steamers and one of them is a Stanley Mountain Wagon. I hang out a bit with Grant Schmaker in East Sound on Orcas Island. He also owns Stanley Mt. Wagons. Here is his website:

I had friends in Eastsound many years ago. All gone now. Still have a couple over in Friday Harbor. Before the big tech explosion in the Seattle area property was still reasonable (early ‘80’s). Wish I could move there in my retirement, but can’t afford it now.

There's an active A club on Whidbey Island. Maybe too far for regular meetings, but would be OK for club runs and such.

Re: Orcas Island, WA

The wife and I toured the island on my bike back in 1996. We stayed over night and made sure we saw all of it. Most Magical Island I have ever been to, in both island chains. Absolutely great people and fantastic scenery to chew on, not to mention the food. We were just talking about our annual summer trip and where to go, and we found ourselves wondering how Orcas Island is doing...........
