Transmission case repair
 

I had a 1931 gearbox housing with a worn down cluster gear boss. I made a grinding/lapping tool to grind the surface flat and smooth again. I ground the boss back to accept a 1928 thrust washer. Henry skipped those and made the bosses taller at the end of 1928 to cut on cost. Luckily these washers are still available. I worked to get a cluster gear end play of .005” - .017” as per Van Pelt’s Transmission Book. I glued sand paper onto the lapping tool, one on each side, started with 60 grid, followed by 80 and finished with 120. I made a little video to show the details. Interesting, where does one find the measuring tools that are needed for so many things when working on a car? I have some that I found on ebay but generally I don't know what the tool is called, like his inside caliper set. Jackdumb

Telescoping gauge kit. We have several tool webshops in The Netherlands. I regularly scroll through these webshops, just to look what’s available.

So happy to see your post and video. I'm a real fan of doing it yourself. Your solution shows how a little ingenuity and the job can be done without a machine shop. I did something similar on my case. Your solution is far more elegant than mine was. Great post.

Bill, it took me one evening to machine the shaft, lapping disk and the 2 bearings. The cast iron grinds away pretty easy, but so does the sandpaper. So I had to cut off and glue on sandpaper several times. Waiting for the glue to cure took the longest time (and patience).

For me a large part of the Model A hobby is to find or to think up, design and build special tools to do the job right.

Find Markus Maurers' website in Zurich, Switzerland, he's made up MANY special tools & fixtures, while restoring his Grandfathers' '29, extended wheelbase, flatbed "A", with a special cab, built by some well known builder there.---There's HOURS & HOURS of GREAT info on his site. The Dog & I communicate with him, OFTEN. He posts GREAT step by step photos of his 14 Year restoration, including very PRECISE INFO/DRAWINGS/DIMENSIONS/ETC, of all the tools & fixtures he builds! Markus should get an "AWARD" for his camera skills, at least.

Yes, there might be, but where is the self satisfaction of having solved the problem with your own ingenuity, design and skill.
