Hesitation in 3rd gear
 

My 1932 Ford v8 roadster is running the stock transmission.

Occasionally when shifting from 2nd to 3rd once in 3rd under heavy pedal the car hesitates and almost revs up like it’s in neutral for maybe a second then goes back to normal. Doesn’t do this in any gear but 3rd . Outside of that the motor /trans seem to work really well.

I am gonna check trans fluid tomorrow, if not that maybe the trans has issues?

My vote also for slipping clutch. Have had similar and finally ended up doing the clutch.

Agree , clutch wear or oil on clutch

Clutch or pressure plate issue of some type. There is more load on it in 3rd gear.

Do you have 1" to 1 1/4" free play on the clutch pedal?

Sorry , I’m kind of new to new to this car. How do I tell/measure how much free play there is on the clutch pedal ? Thanks!

It's the measurement from the clutch pedal being in the full up position (where it should be just setting there) to when you first start to feel resistance as you start to press down on it.

More specifically, when the clutch pedal is all the way up, you can press it down with a couple of fingers. However after it’s traveled an inch or so, it will make contact with the fingers in the pressure plate and you would have MUCH more resistance to pushing it down towards the floor. In fact, it would usually take your foot & leg to push it the rest of the way.

That inch to an inch and a half is what we call free play. If you have no free play at all, the clutch is either out of adjustment or very worn out. The adjustment is made under the car at the clutch adjustment linkage.....usually a threaded rod with a clevis. On some cars the rod just has a couple hex nuts to make the adjustment.

Try your adjustment first. If you’ve got the normal free play measurement, chances are the clutch disc is worn out or oil soaked. In either case you will have to replace it.

If by chance you are not using your clutch pedal for a foot rest? Also I would think if you had oil or grease on the clutch you would have a clutch chatter.
