1930 rumble seat original but rubber pads too big
 

Hi,

My 1930 Cabriolet has new rubber at top of the rumble seat corners round pads but they are so thick the latch does not work. So as usual all aftermarket parts do not fit as default, unless you are really lucky.

Does anyone have better rubber pads. My originals broke in half and nothing is the same.

I just ground the rubber bumpers down until you get the correct fit. I think that is the correct solution.

Yes I will probably try to razor blade and or then grind them off, but doesn't it seem they make all parts wrong so that we have to mess with them?

I had to grind mine, I think i split with razor blade 1st then ground them down to fit.

It's cheaper to use a close part, then grind to fit, than it is to make a new correct mold for a new part.

well I guess you are correct at this point, but why not just use the right mold in the first place?

As I understand it the originals were too big and cut to fit at the factory, but I could be wrong.

In any event,

You want to fit them because I am sure today there is more variation on fit than you might like. So it is much better to have to fit them.

I have two roadsters and one I barely had to cut the bumpers down, and one I had to remove almost half of the height. I think there was serious variation in the manufacture.

Makes you wonder if they had Sm,Med,Lg on the assembly line, then just fine tuned them to speed up the process. Particularly for the non Ford bodies, built away from prying eyes.

I just did a search on this little issue I am having today.i just got the rubber bumpers for the rumble seat lid and right away noticed how much taller they will be.I guess I will figure out the correct height needed to be able to latch the lid with some other rubber thickness.problem I will have is getting the end in the hole so not going to be able to install and remove to figure exact height.The end seems a whole lot bigger than it needs to be or rubber should be softer to give or squeeze in more.

I cursed mine for many days. Warming helps. Soapy water helps. Pushing and prying from under helps. I had to cut/grind nearly half the top off to get latch and alignment right.

They did finally work, but if I was on the assembly line trying to put these versions on, Ford would have gone bankrupt.

There were originally approximatly three (3) sizes of A-41518 Deck Door Bumpers to choose from. Just what each pertained to, year wise, is not known.

The reproduction that is made is taller than the three originals.

It is to bad that we have lost most of the knowledgeable guys that used to frequent this site...we need them back!

I finally got them installed. Ended up removing height on sanding belt to almost 1/4" thickness.Seems a lot but that is what the originals were and they were the original ones that crumbled upon removal. I tried different thickness of rubber I had thinking that 3/8" or 1/2" would work but like I said I had to work down to 1/4". Stabbed my finger big time trying to get the finished ones in the hole but paint job survived and I will heal.
