Pinstriping With Scotch 3M 218 Tape
 

I was investigating this product and it appears to be easy to use and produces great results. It has the flexibility to follow curves and adhere well. Has anyone used this product successfully? Also, what is required for the painted surface of the car prior to painting the strip? My thoughts would be to remove any type of wax without harming the surface of the paint or leaving some type of residue which would keep the strip from setting properly.

I used a yellow on my dash, can't remember who made it.
But I do remember that you want to do it on a nice warm day so the tape is very flexible, and for the tight turning corners you have to really stretch the tape...without braking it and move slow.
Not the best job, but it will do for now

On my sport coupe, I used fine line tape to mask the stripe and sign painters enamel to paint the stripe.

My car was restored but never had the factory stripes put back on. I found a guy at a car show who did hand pinstriping so I hired him to do mine after researching the proper way they should be applied. Enamel paint was used and he did not use any guide tape. 'Prep-All' was applied first to clean the surface. Job came out fantastic.

I tried it and the tape left a rough edge. I assume it was operator error, but I went back to hand pin striping anyway. Sometimes I can lay a nice line, other times it looks like Stevie Wonder painted the line with his feet. Practice, practice, practice.

I've used red 3M striping tape on the coupe and sedan . I like it and would use it again !!!

I also used it on my Brewster green 68B. Only problem was they didn't have anything close to Apple Green. I noticed that the Brewster Green Town Car combo used a Gold stripe on Brewster green. I now have a Town Car color combo on a Cabriolet. It actually looks very good except for the imperfections from my lack of skill. When I find a stripper who can do Apple Green it will be changed since I lean toward being correct. I just didn't want to go stripe-less.

Do as Glenn posted. We use Finesse Co. pin striping stencil tapes (New York), available in multiple sizes and patterns. They have brushes also. The single 3/32" is close to original width. One can purchase 1 shot sign enamel from Dick Blick art supplies or local art store and mix and match to get the correct colors such as Apple Green, Vermillion, Straw by tinting as needed and using a sword brush for a 1 coat job. The stencil is pulled off immediately after brushing to leave virtually no edges, etc. The stencil can be repositioned before hand brushing to get perfect alignment at doors and curves, being careful not to stretch the tape. Also, ones has the enamel for future touch up. All the prep needed is to wipe the areas with 70% rubbing alcohol and a tack rag in a garage or protected area for drying.

most any drug store should have 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol

I use 3m fineliner tape and one shot enamel paint with a sword brush.The surface needs to be clean of wax etc. I use surface cleaner from a car paint shop

Show and go car, either way if done right.

I have seen tape jobs that looked better than some painted pinstripes.
