The Ford Barn - Gas Tank

I have a 29 Briggs Fordor 165 B. I have noticed my gas tank is not part of the cowl, there is a filler panel on the firewall and it appears that would be the way out of the cab should I drop the tank. Any info on this type would be appreciated such as what year cars and body styles have this tank, are they all the same, can they be interchanged say a tank this style from a 30 would it fit a 29 etc. Thanks for the input

In the vol.6 how to restore your model a, has an article describing r&r of this tank.

I believe only the 29 Fordors used that tank. Not interchangeable with the 30's.

From my experience, the 28-29 tank is universal fit in all bodies but not in 30-31 cars. Those later tanks have their own variants. There are also some changes for the early tank but all are interchangeable for fit. Those on fordors are meerely covered with a cowling and are removed into the interior of the body once the filler - spacer is removed. One change to the 29 tank was the filler bung for use in commercial bodies in E1930 with the earlier body. Non fordor bodies for 28-29 lift out of the top like 30-31 tanks.

Both national clubs have a bi-monthly mag with tech articles. These issues go back to the mid - early 1950s. That is a big library. Both clubs print just the articles in book form and are available singly or as a set. Steve Plucker has an index of the articles including some other sources, a great work for research. Most all of the answers have been figured out years ago, it's just about having the index and the library.

The tank in my 29 Cabriolet is under the cowl. I removed it by disassembling the fire wall. (The upper section of that is the front wall of the tank.) After freeing it up, it drops down and is removed from inside the car.

Thank you, this is great info. I have joined both clubs and look forward to their publications. I'm new in this hobby and trying to learn all that is available in the tech world. The flash drive is expensive but must be a great source for tech info. Another thing on my list. This is a great site.
