29 Tudor ignition coil question
 

I am putting things back together after a 6 year battle with health issues. I am getting ready to connect wires to the coil and I noticed that the coil that was on the car when I started restoring it does not have any markings as to which is + or - Is there a problem if it is connected to the incorrect post? If so, how do I tell which is which if they are not marked? I know that the system is a positive ground and I have a wiring diagram, but the coil not being marked makes me wonder!

Use this to test the polarity of the coil wiring. It will run with the wires hooked up on either coil post, but it will run better if the polarity is correct.

No serious damage for a which test. Hook it up and there is a polarity tester you can get from the vendors that goes into the distributor cap. Run the engine long enough to see if it is correct. If it is go on to bigger things, if not reverse the wires and make a mark sone where on the coil so you can repeat.

Has anyone used this type of tester?

How does it work?

I have a spark test that basically has a clear plastic tube that shows the spark--is that all I need to test polarity?

My 9th grade auto shop teacher, Mr. White used to like to demonstrate this procedure to the class, then hand the pencil to the class jokester for him to try it. The rest of the class would get a big kick out of it when that high tension voltage traveled up the pencil lead and out the end into his hand.

"To check coil polarity hold a pencil lead in the spark path with the plug wire about a third of an inch away from the distributor terminal. You’ll see a FLARE on one side of the pencil lead and this flare should be on the spark plug side of the lead." Tom suggests to hold the pencil in the middle or even slide the pencil into a plastic tube to avoid an electrical shock.

If the flare is on the plug wire side. Switch the two wires on the coil.

Lesson learned! No harm done! But nowadays that teacher would be sued by a snowflake parent, fired by the school board, and sent off to jail on some trumped up phony charge!
