Front floor mat on '42 Tudor

All,

I have the original floor mat in place on our '42 Super Deluxe Tudor Sedan. At this point it's a dark taupe color with the carpet inserts and Jute backing intact, but is slowly going to pieces as the old rubber just disintegrates. In the '41 to '48 book put out by the club a black mat with carpet inserts is specified for my car. I suppose the original black color could have just faded over time to the current color.

In looking at vendor catalogues, I see I can get a new black mat for the car but without the carpet inserts. I could probably find some carpet pieces that would be a close match and just glue them to the new mat.

Has anybody tried to do this before? and how did it work out? Is my guess about the original rubber fading to the taupe color plausible, or could I have some strange mat? Is there any way to stabilize and continue to use the original mat?
