darn old worn out junk!!! i should link this to my earlier thread entitled" this darn old car', i will when i get a minute. but, to make a long story longer, i want to put together a rear end for the beater 34 tudor i got last year. just trying to make it usable for now. the previous owner thought it was ok to install a rear end that he found in a ditch some where, and since the u joint end was full of dirt, you only need to put it together minus a few parts, like speedo gear, and it fit just fine! i discovered this because the "good motor" was bad. so...i thought i was a cool guy and had plenty of inventory to build a good rearend so she would be a driver next spring. i have now torn down 4 rears, and so far, one usable drive shaft, one carrier and spider gears, the rest is junk. the last one "came out of a restored car", well, it did have some remains of paint, but water inside killed it. they cant lay out on the ground for 30 years! that one does have very good brake drums, but since the moisture ruined the races on the housing, i presume the races in the hubs will not look too good either. i know we can put new races on the housing, but is there a repair for the hubs? 32-36 takes a bigger bearing od, so a sleave? so far no usable ring&pinion, havnt pressed out any pinions yet, but i dont think there will be any of the double cone bearings either. got 2 axles with good tapers and keyways, but pitted gears. they may be usable. again, i am just trying to put a driver together, i find it hard to believe i need to put a thousand dollars in a rear end! no around the world trips planned, but geez one bad flaking pitted part will wreck all the other new stuff in short order. i hate to do things half way like that! got 2 worn out trannys laying in pile for the coupe now too, waiting for mac vp to get back to work ....worn out stuff every where, here...i need a beer...

Re: darn old worn out junk!!! One thing you can do is look for a gearset from an up to 48 rear end, with a little machining they will fit,
as to the driveshaft,if you use the later gearset bore the old 10 spline out and weld in a 6 spline couple from the later model(only old ford ones are good). As for the axle bearing area, look up one of my older posts on hub bearing repair, our 33 did probably 20000klms on a bad axle bearing area,so one with a pitted area on the bottom should easy do a few thousand miles for sure, also wear in the hub bearing area.this was worn bad on the same side as the badly worn axle bearing and did the same miles. If you are only tooling around town you will be surprised how long the worn original bits will last. My 34 ran for years with a real badly rusted ring gear,as it sat in the water, sure you could hear it ,BUT it still did lots of miles. What ratio are you after, I have a real nice late 4.44 that I got by mistake you can have for the freight.(from Australia though) I,m sure some one will have a 4.11,these are not that sought after, but still go great ,the 33 ran one for years. And you can reclaim the hubs and axle bearing areas, but a lot of machine work is needed. as before see one of my earlier posts on that. Surely you must be able to source some good rear hub from the USA,I got a real nice(read nearly perfect ) set from the USA,cost was not too bad freight was ,but they are around. Lawrie |
Re: darn old worn out junk!!! Cas, you might try Charlie New York on this forum. I got a nice bell from him and he should have a lot of rear end parts.

Re: darn old worn out junk!!! When a person can't afford the new reproduction parts, the only thing left is flea-pay, local swap meets, C-list, and patience. The swap meet section on here is another good resource for the sale and want of particular items. I still remember when Hemmings was the only outside resource other than joining a model specific club but the old parts were more plentiful back then too.

Sorry for your pain |
Re: darn old worn out junk!!! thank you Lawrie for the gear set offer, i will decline. i only drove this car a little bit last year due to a leaky radiator, now fixed, but even that short time i noticed the low gears in the car, most likely 411 as most 34's were, compared to the 378's and 354's in my other cars. ts got a 59ab in it now, so it will pull the taller gears nicely. i have 2 more 34 rears, one in the car (found in ditch! ), and one that wont turn, so not too exciting. i also have some later rears which may yield a ring and pinion, and i can machine them to fit. i have read that story before, just have to look up the details. so i will wash up this junk today and look over the bearings one more time, but it looks like its time to get out the credit card and do some shopping

Re: darn old worn out junk!!! I have a driveshaft from a 48 that you can have. Already removed from housing and can be shipped in a pvc tube or carpet roll.

Re: darn old worn out junk!!! thanks funrunr for the shaft offer! i am ok in that dept. did some googling tonight using timken bearing #'s and cut most of the vendors prices by quite abit. one amazing thing, that double race for the pinion bearings, 18-4616, is about 150. by itself, then add 20 apiece for bearings, so 190 or so, and joes lists the three parts as a kit for 100 bucks! how can that be? gotta call when these holidays are finally done

Re: darn old worn out junk!!! The days of finding guys pulling their restored '34 rear ends out to replace them with Ford 9-inch rear ends is just about over with, I hope it's over with! Its just about impossible to find a good '34 rear end you can buy, drop in and run down the road. What's left are the ones that have had their torque tubes pointed at the sky and used as rain gauges.
Take a good look at the carriers on these '34 rear ends, they crack. A guy told me that story 20-years ago and I went home and sure enough the one I was putting together was cracked. He said to use the stronger, later carriers. He said that they would stick out past the carrier bearings but it wouldn't hurt a thing. I also have a '34 with a cracked spring hanger too. I think I have four '33-'34 rear ends and all them have had some issue. I bought a NOS set of 3.54s, bearings seals, gaskets. If you can put one together for $1000.00 your doing better than me. I have that much in a used rear end and a NOS ring and pinion. Its not a cheap hobby anymore! The used '34 rear ends I've seen are advertised for around $300.00 to $400.00 and these are not out of running cars. There are a good chance these have were used as rain gauges. |
Re: darn old worn out junk!!! Be VERY careful of the pinion kits for 100.
ask me I know,I was putting a rear together for a mate and he supplied some from a supplier in the US,they came in plain white boxes.they were JUNK with a capitol J use only timkin or nos ones or bower.they are around. Lawrie |
Re: darn old worn out junk!!! yeah lawrie i was thinking that too. kind of two old sayings apply here, "if its to good to be true, it probably isnt, and you get what you pay for. happy new year all!

Re: darn old worn out junk!!! well, i tore open rear end #5, and it too had sat with water in it. it did however have a nice pinion bearing race and two cones! good news indeed, thats a money saver. now, quit foolin with this junk and order some parts. i also located a new 10 spline 378, late style so i have some machining to do but i will end up with a good rear

Re: darn old worn out junk!!! Don't throw anything away yet though. All that junk might just be considered worthy, sooner than you might think.
