tire advice
 

My next move with my restoration of my 28 tudor is to replace the tires. It's time I do my homework on tires. Best place to buy, best prices, is it necessary to replace the tubes and rim liners. Any info on tires that I can get would be greatly appreciated. Joe

I purchased rim liners and tubes from Bratton's. The tires were Universal which got off the internet. The new tubes do not seem to be as thick as some of the original ones that were Ward's Riverside( how long has it been since you heard that name). Clean the inside of the rims, remove any rust and repaint. The smoother these inner surfaces are the less chance of pinching the tube when installing the tire. Coat the inside of the tire with baby powder so tube will slide easily. A little goop or soap on the bead will help with installation of the tire and use the "garbage bag method" to install the tires.

I have Universal blackwalls on one car and Firestone blackwalls on another. I can't complain about either set, they seem to be good tires.

most all tires go thu "coker" today . im using firestone white walls . been great so far ........... steve

Over the last 50 years we have used pretty much all the tire brands that were offered. Right now the choices are between Coker and Kelsey. Kelsey handles the Goodyear brand, Coker other brands. We currently have Firestones from Coker on the sedan, but have a set of Goodyears on the way to replace them. We have Firestones on another car and Goodyears on the roadster. The phaeton in the picture has Firestones. All have held up well (around 20,000 miles) so the choice is more style and price. The Goodyear tires are being made to the current judging standards just for info. We did an article on this in the Model A Times awhile back.

Just called Universal Tire in Hershey Pa. They said tires will be going up by 8% Jan 1st

Fedex and UPS are raisng rates substantially for 2011. Take shipping into consideration when comparing vendors. Snyders is close to you, but if you drive to Snyders to get the tires you are subject to that county's sales tax.

Good point. If I but them in Pa, I pay both the shipping and tax. About 45.00 to ship. Might as well just drive the 60 miles to Snyders.

2 1/2 years ago I put on 5 new firestones. Within the 2 years and less then 4000 miles, all were worn out with absolutly no tread left. (yes I rotated them)

I recently bought a set of universal tires, tubes and rim liners and am very happy with them. While trying to mount them, however, there is no way the bag method or goop would let me get them on without tire irons and the associated nicks in the wheel. The tires are very stiff as you would imagine.

I replaced my Firestones with Universal tires direct form Hershey. Had no problem with the bag method.

Would someone please explain the pastic bag,baby power, etc methods for us newbie, go to Sears, MR TIRE types. Pictures would be great if you have them on file. I would like to replace 4 or 5 tires liners and tubes after straightening painting the wheels early this coming year. But don't have a clue ! Any you tube video's out there maybe.

I found it very easy to mount tires without damaging the rims - I bolted each rim to the rear axle (supported on a jackstand ). This allows you to work the tire with both hands while the rim is stationary and accessible all around! Never even needed a tire iron.

Joe, thanks for the link. That pretty much tells it all. Looks to easy to be true, I had a hard time putting a tube in a hand truck a couple of weeks ago.

Another tire issue for those that have side mounts. Many tires are too wide to fit into and to be able to be removed from the side mount fender recess with 35 PSI. I have about 6" recess and the tire is 5 3/4" but when I try to fish the tire out I have to let the air out first. So much for having a spare tire. The issue is when the spare is un-bolted from the holder I must pull the tire/wheel away from the 3 studs and then the tire will not come out.
Does anyone know how to handle this problem? I keep thinking I need to reposition the holder but.....

Goodyears fit the sidemount as 4.75", without such complications, wear best of all named based on past Fordbarn commentary, and the diamond tread is both original and great looking in my opinion.
I am very pleased with mine both asthetically and in wearout resistance.

If I were in the market for a new set of 21s, I'd get the Goodyears. They're gorgeous
